Spec me an LED Torch

Depends on the flashlight you want to use them with as some take different size cells.

Eh? 26650 IS the size of the cell - one 26650 battery is the same size as any other 26650 battery!

I just got one of these:
"True Utility NanoLIte LED Keyring Flashlight with Case - Worlds Smallest Flashlight"
Its pretty darn tiny, and on my keys without adding any real bulk.
Light output is suprising good (4 lumens advertised), and a reasonably focused small circle beam pattern. It seems to go out about 10 feet usefully at night on a dog walk.

Comes with 3 full battery sets (stacks of 3 lithium cells, i think). Ships in a waterproof clear plastic re-usable case, that in itself seems worth a fair amount considering the sub £7 price tag!

My Mrs has already asked me to get her one after using it.

Top purchase!

As in the length of the battery itself.

The keeppower 26650 is shorter than the olight 26650 and thinner.

They shouldn't be different. The 2665 bit in the battery name means it's 26mm wide and 65mm long. Same with an 18650 battery - 18mm wide, 65mm long.

I got the Mrs an Olight S30R for Xmas, which in itself is a damn nice torch, the magnetic charging base is perfect for daily charging (used for walking the dog), and it's light output has been impressive as has the build quality (of course for £48 you expect a bit more!).

I then bagged a TC20 when the deal was posted on here and considering it cost around the same price, the light output is fantastic!, the only drawback for me is the charging is not as slick as the Olight, but you can't have everything.

Torch experts, I need a recommendation! I appreciate the ideal torch probably lies within these 240 pages, but I've not got the time to read everything (he says at 1:25am surfing OCUK.....).

My current torch is a cheapy LED jobby from Halfrauds. It's "2x AA" in size.

Requirements:
  • Compact and lightweight. I don't mind if it's long and thin or short and fat ( ) but so long as the overall volume is relatively low.
  • Bright! Brighter the better.
  • It's needed for more spotlight type work than a wide spread of light. If it can adjust between the two is a bonus but not essential.
  • Battery or chargeable, doesn't matter.
  • Well built (can handle drops etc, so no cheap plastic)
  • Price is flexible, I don't want to go crazy but I'm fed up with cheap crap torches.
  • Did I say bright? Stellar levels of brightness!
Google search brings back the "JETBEAM JET-I MK CREE XP-G". Looks good, any experience?

Let me know what's out there :D

Thanks

The best one I have that meets those requirements is the good old AA maglite with the following bulb:
http://www.thetorchsite.co.uk/Terralux_TLE-5EX.html

Adjustable, AA, Bright, Very well built, small and cheap. Had mine for over 5 years,

You wont get stellar bright from a single AA, as its 1.2v (nicad) or 1.5v(disposable)
If you can go to an 14500 cell, its 3.7v to 4.2v so can drive an LED harder. But you will need charger too.

That torch you listed is only very bright with the 14500 cell, with a single AA its probably about the same as the converted 2x AA maglite, although I am not sure it can really drive 150 lumens from 1.5v! So i would guess that is a lab figure, probably with highly dubious tests :D

Not sure if it the case here but Olight do customised versions of the batteries for charging features, etc. (not protected stuff - additional features and/or connection) they generally aren't compatible with other devices that take that standard battery but their torches should accept both but you might lose some features with a standard battery such as faster or more convenient charging options or turbo output modes, etc.

Can you tell more about the intended usage. What range do you need? Would a head torch be more use?

The Jetbeam I mentioned could be an option, and you could get a Nitecore charger and a couple of Sanyo 3500mah 18650 cells for your budget.

Thanks for the replies everyone, will continue reading up in the next few days.

I've a very specific use, it's to inspect aircraft. Range needs to be around 30 meters at most, but I need to see with quite a level of clarity, hence my requirement for brightness. Also in a geek and cannot have just a "normal" flashlight, it needs to be brighter than the sun :D. Head lamp would be no use as it's got to point into lots of areas rather than just where I'm looking.

I need to look into these 14500 and 18650 cells. Where's a good place to buy them? I'm reluctant to buy non-branded cheapy lithium cells, having worked with traditional flat cells I like to know I'm buying good quality given their explosive nature if you get a dud.
