I know they’re all very reliable these days, but I want the most super reliable 512GB SATA SSD known to man.

Long story short: I’m putting a fresh Win 10 install on a 70 year old neighbour’s PC and I want the thing to run flawlessly for ever.

It is unlikely your neighbour is going to hammer the drive :D I'd just avoid the really bargain basement, possibly QLC stuff and make sure you get a reputable TLC-based drive, preferably with DRAM if it is SATA. I don't think you'll want to pay the premium for an MLC drive and even if you did, I'm not sure it'll help because it is not likely wear is what will kill the drive in this scenario.

Avoid Samsung, they have massively high failure rates on their 870 EVO series. You might want to look at enterprise SSDs which are designed for better endurance and power loss protection.

Samsung are very hit and miss - you have the whole 840 Evo issues requiring a firmware update so old data doesn't become unreadable, then the whole issue with 990s seeming to degrade quickly, but other models have great performance and reliability. I've had no problems with 970 Pros and 980s though some 980s are affected by an issue.

I've been hammering a 840 Evo with the firmware upgrade for ~10 years and so far it has held up fine.

That's true, but the 870 EVO is the current TLC SATA drive that they sell today, and since Samsung have been completely silent you have to assume that whatever issue it has could still be present. If I needed another SATA SSD today I might be tempted to look for a used drive with good stats that has a history of good reliability like the 860 EVO.

Odd not had any issues with the samsung sm883 i got?

I use their drives a lot without problems, but there are some models which have lots of problems and with my 840 Evo for instance they had to issue a firmware update which prevents data from becoming unreadable prematurely over time.

That said SSDs in general don't seem to be a trouble free thing even though many people don't have issues - many brands and models you'll find problems especially the cheaper stuff.

Just make that there's nothing crucial on that drive. It's almost 3 years ago when my Samsung 840 EVO died without any hints of giving up on life. The machine was normally on 24/7 and one morning it decided to simply give up on me, not even giving me a chance to retrieve any data. :(
