Speed cameras for cyclists

If it's full of people then you should not be cycling, instead walk maybe a seperate lane for bikes? If it's empty I don't see a problem.

I think a cycling speed camera is stupid, not many people have a speedo on thier bike and 10mph, you can run at that speed, might as well get off and run.

Why shouldn't anybody be cycling?

As long as they are doing so in a safe manner then there's no problem, the speed limit is silly as you can ride like a tit at under 10mph

I've never been to Bournemouth's promenade but I'm guessing it's not a road but an area full of pedestrians on a sunny afternoon. Sure, 'speed cameras' are a bit extreme but requiring bikes to slow down in such an area isn't a bad idea.

I agree. The comment on that page about 'stopping all fun' might win applause from the gallery until they or their kid gets hit by a bike doing 25mph. There is a 10mph limit which is significantly faster than walking, it's obviously not an area suitable for fast speeds (in bike terms) so this is fine with me.

An accident is less likely at that lower speed, and in the event of an accident the consequences are likely to be less severe.

Not too hard to work out is it?

You're taking my comment out of context.

But anyways, of course an accident at greater speeds will be more severe although i'm not convinced they are more likely to happen.

I can see this from both sides and personally think that trying to enforce the speed limit is better than the alternative of baning bikes from the sea front which has happened in other places. To all those questioning how it can be enforced, cyclists can be fines under traffic laws and uner those circulstances failure to give the correct details to a police man is an arrestable offence.

Oh noes! :o lol

The police can't win offer to go softly softly and people laugh and mock them, wade in with fines etc and people go off on one about heavy handed ness.

A modest speed limit is a happy compromise, if cyclists will be sensible. I know it isn't nice walking along a footpath and having some knob rush past at warp speed.

Why is it always just to stop small children being injured? Would adults mysteriously escape any harm if a bike smashed into them? Would the cyclist not risk death as their face catapults toward the ground?

From the sounds of it, it's not really appropriate to be travelling at higher speeds in this area. It sounds a ridiculous idea to get the speed cameras out, but at least they're doing something.
Like someone has already said, the police are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Great idea, about 4 months ago I was hit by some retard cyclist riding on the pavement near where I work, gave me a dislocated shoulder and a concussion for my trouble.

It's down a hill near quite a busy roundabout so I can understand not wanting to cycle in that, but the he was going stupidly fast (faster than the cars on the road were) and just not caring, many children also walk that route due to a near by school.

^ if I am forced to cycle on the pavement (very rarely) I go very slowly, walking pace at most and assume a pedestrian could wander into my path at any moment. These people who race along at 15-20mph+ are a serious menace.
