Spider web

Well you could easily have a farm they dont take up much space do they? and then when they die you can collect them up and they will decompose and then you can dump them on the rainforest so it grows back again

Did we ever work out which banned poster this bloke is? His posts are crimes against the internet.

although they can produce the proteins they still can't weave them.
Wow, that's pretty impressive they've even done that really.

They do seen so have pee'd on thunderbirdz' bonfire with the Spider farms tho:

"Up to now it has been impossible to produce "spider fibre" on a commercial scale. Unlike silk worms, spiders are too anti-social to farm successfully. "

I think they need to develop some sort of spider booze to make them more socialable. :D

may i just say:

In modern times, the Golden Orb Web Spider's silk is set to become a major product. The silk is almost as strong as Kevlar, the strongest man-made material which is drawn from concentrated sulphuric acid. In contrast, spider silk is drawn from water. If we could manufacture spider silk, it would have a million uses from parachutes, bullet-proof vests, lightweight clothing, seatbelts, light but strong ropes, as sutures in operations, artificial tendons and ligaments. Studies are now being done to have genetically engineered plants produce fluid polymers which can be processed into silk! Spiders are not used to produce silk fabric because Silkworm Moth caterpillars produce twice as much silk and are easier to manage (for example, they don't eat each other up!!)).

more to point out that some peoples high and mighty attitude might have been misguided, as is often the case on here

Not really, the OP was suggesting that we could start making buildings from silk collected by spiders which is obviously not the case. Everyone acknowledged that spider silk was pretty strong however quite rightly pointed out that it doesn't have any real use as was suggested by the OP.
