Spider web

WEll why dont we build stuff out of it instead of steel then? The world trader centre probably wouldnt have fallen down if it had been

Because the amount of it you would need to create a building the same strength as a building made from steel or otherwise would be ridiculous, not to mention an incredible fire hazzard.

A spiders web is... actually you know what, it's not even worth it :-/

I will sum it up for you.

If we could, we would. But we can't so we won't and we don't.

This Thread just fails ---- EPICLY ----

I got one....

Why wasn't the Titanic made of wood as wood floats and then it wouldn't have fallen under the water

FAIL!

spider silk is ridiculously strong - many many people have tried to make it synthetically for many many years - it can't be done at the moment, and i wouldn't hold your breath!

is it true that if a steel thread waas made at the same thickness of spiders web, the web would be able to support a lot more weight

yes, a cord of spider silk as thick as your thumb would hold a jumbo jet.

Of course there are current synthetics/materials which are far far stronger, and at best we;ve made a poor imitation of spider silk using a warehouse sized machine, and also we've tried making it in genetically engineered goats (it comes out of their milk).

Spider silk has missed it's time we've moved past it, unless it becomes very cheap to make.
