My 2 day old F1 1GB just burst into flames :(

Typical that it'd be right after I finished setting up the system. Any known reliability issues with this drive? Need to RMA it and go through the whole setup again :( :(

edit : anyone know if I'd be better RMA'ing it to OcUK or directly to Samsung? I'd ideally like them to replace just the burnt out circuit board (if possible) so I don't lose my data....

Yep!

Booting into Windows, saw a flash through the side vent in the case. Smelt burning so pulled the power. Took drive out and one of the ICs is all burnt :(

Unlucky. I bought one of these drives recently. Was planning on dumping everything I have onto the drive first before making backups. Looks like I'll have to do it the long way ensuring I never have a single copy of my files at any point.

Yeah, I've sent OcUK an RMA refund request, will need to buy a replacement drive today locally today though, which is a shame as OcUK lose business due to a fault in the drive, but oh well!

OMG  now I'm getting a bit worried, I've just go two F1's for my NAS setup. I hope this is just a bad experience with one drive not a common problem.

I'd think it is - to me it looks like a manufacturing defect within one of the ICs on the circuit board under the drive. Never seen mention of any other drives failing so hopefully an isolated incident. could have been nasty if something had caught fire inside the case, very lucky I was sitting there!

As you say it's just as well you were around otherwise it could have been a lot worse, let's hope you get things sorted quickly with the RMA, I know how frustrating it is waiting for something that is system critical like a HDD, I hope you didn't loose too much data you can always replace the system but it the other stuff that you loose. I lost about 500gig a year or so ago :( it certainly made me remember to regular backups of the important stuff.

Thanks mate - luckily I didn't lose anything critical - I think I'm going to image the disk right after install though, and I use Mozy Home to keep my photos and whatnot safe. Fingers crossed the next drive comes with a few less fireworks :)

got one last week myself , failed S.M.A.R.T tests upon first reboot and is away to RMA after only 1day.
Seems to be a bad batch doing the rounds of these , you only have to look at competitor reviews to see it.
