Spinpoint F1

my 1Tb from OC died after exactly a week. Luckily it was only being used as my backup drive, so i had the original files on the main drive. One minute i was transferring data to it, then windows locked up. Restarted the system, and the bios reported a hdd issue and refused to boot. Disconnected the 1TB drive, rebooted, and managed to get into windows. Connected the drive, and it had lost all of my data and reported only a 32MB partition.

I had bad blocks on one. Just sent it back to the supplier, let's see how long it takes them to replace it...

The two others I bought have been fine for a month

Gigabyte mainboard? That's a bug apparently :S Its fixable without loss of data too!

My f1 has just failed after only 2 weeks of usage,

RMA'ed today. hope for a good replacement in a couple of days after they have tested it.

Considering getting two 1TB F1's, but reading the number of issues here, they don't really seem very reliable, do they? Also less warranty than Seagate and Maxtor, which offer five years. What you think?

Could the method of posting be adding to the issues seen?

When I bought a couple of Maxtors 4-5 years ago, they were secure inside a foam box. Now, my latest two drives (Velociraptors) seem to be left in just anti-static bags and a bit of bubble-wrap. One of the drives has been RMA'd with problems for a refund.

The three Samsungs I bought all came in a plastic sleeve, then bubble-wrap. One had a problem and has been replaced without issue (so far).

40% failure rate of all purchased drives (not just F1s) is not very good

Perhaps the higher tolerances in manufacture are being compromised by Royal Mail's handling techniques...

My 2 day old F1 1GB just burst into flames :(

Typical that it'd be right after I finished setting up the system. Any known reliability issues with this drive? Need to RMA it and go through the whole setup again :( :(

edit : anyone know if I'd be better RMA'ing it to OcUK or directly to Samsung? I'd ideally like them to replace just the burnt out circuit board (if possible) so I don't lose my data....

sounds as crazy as guy shooting pistol at a car and expecting it to blow up or even set on fire

bad luck

I know 4 people with Samsung F1's

Of those 1 corrupts it's data on a monthly basis but RAID1 allows the array to rebuild. Another has been causing him no end of grief with corruption, and finally last night my 1Tb drive disappeared from windows altogether and when I went into disk management it turned out all the data had disappeared including the partition

In every example the drives have been checked with Samsungs ESUtil and it has informed us all the drive is fine. I am now highly suspicious of the effectiveness of that utility.

As for my own I will low level format it tonight, format it again normally and then try it again. But if it screws up one more time I will be ditching it and I know my friends feel the same way. The final guy I know with one has been taking our advice and is backing up the data on it reguarly

HTH's someone.
