SPL season 2012-13

I know our team isn't great just now. What about your own. One defeat from the worst ever points total to win the spl. Not exactly doing that well yourself.

Every time we play in the champs league, we get beat or draw in the SPL straight after - I dare say it has a bearing and its hard to remain focussed when you have Barcelona and Juventus to think about - take my word for it :-)

The SPL IS competitive right now - maybe not for first spot but that's not the be all and end all - from what I can see, this league has never been so competitive

It's competitive for 2nd spot. so if you ain't going to win the league its not competitive. It's basically gone from a 2 horse race to a 1 horse race. I'm sure the rest of the SPL think it's very competitive

McMav - its competitive for European places with more than 2/3rds of the league trying, like a bear, to grab one. Your vision is impaired with those rolleyes !

Is it competitive to actually win it though no its not. The whole point of the league is to try and win it. Cant be that when its a 1 horse race. There is no competition to win it.

No - there is competition not just to win it - if that was the case, the rest of the league would have been disbanded a long time ago while the old firm battle it out for top spot every year - that view is a little skewed I am afraid.

Thats a really low standard.

You call this competitive? Scottish football is a joke now. I haven't watched it since the mid/late 90s and I've rarely watched it since the mid 00s. Even the times I have watched it this past year or two, it feels like I'm watching local school football. Scottish football is dire.

If you don't like it, why comment? Sick of the negativity and doom-mongers wanting to drag football in Scotland down.

It has problems for sure but there is plenty of quality and good football as well. I've watched lots of games that are as good, if not better than many many Premiership games I've watched.

As for not being competitive, well to challenge Celtic this season would have been difficult for any of the teams but in time I hope someone else will get some consistency. This season is not really that different from many other leagues around Europe. In Spain, Germany and England the top leagues champions are as good as sewn up already with 12 point plus leads.

Will be harder though as they have slashed the prize money for second place while leaving 1st place prize untouched. Not that it's a lot of money but for the smaller clubs it could mean being able to buy another player or not. Was really surprised when I seen this years prize breakdown.

Indeed, for once, I agree with you. It should not have been changed. However, I do believe that the disparity between first and second should be greater and, to this end, the first place position should be increased over time to make it a more worthwhile prize than finishing second.

You got a link to the current years prize?

I don't know how much it will hit in terms of numbers as the TV deal is improved for the teams besides Celtic so they will be getting more cash from that now. But yeah it doesn't give a big incentive to push for 2nd over 3rd looking at that table.

That's Brooner decided he's retiring at the end of the season, and moving 'upstairs'.

Smart money would be on Derek Adams to replace him next season, done a brilliant job with Ross County imo.

Celts fight back from 1-3 to beat Aberdeen 4-3 in a dramatic game at Parkhead. In fairness, if the Celtic players had remembered their shooting boots in the first half the scoreline would have been very different and would not have needed a last minute winner. Well done to Aberdeen for making a game of it.

I think what Eddie means was that it was refreshing to see a team have a go at Celtic instead of sitting back with 10 men behind the ball ;)

how is that refreshing? Were Ross County refreshing in beating Celtic, were St Mirren refreshing getting a cup win against Celtic? No, tactically they matched Celtic and to a degree got a break that separated the two teams. Some will say that Celtic got the luck winning the game in the final minutes of the game. Just cos Celtic are Celtic doesn't mean that they are automatically given the right to win every game and look down on the other teams in the league......look St Mirren have silverware already this season. But going by some of the posters on here its as if Celtic should be winning everything in their path.....

At the weekend Brechin were down at Alloa. Now out of the four games played against them theres been an Alloa win (under Jim Weir) two wins for Brechin and a draw. In the last game Ray McKinnon set his team out 5 - 2 - 3 on the basis that Alloa in my opinion are probably the best passing team in our division, quick, sharp and can punish many sides in the league (only team to beat full time Queen of the South if i remember) so he allowed them a lot of possession and hit them on the counter attack. First half was terrible as both teams cancelled each other out but in the second half despite Alloa having more chances, Brechin came away with a one nil win due to our ability to counter attack at pace. Did we sit back for a lot of the game? Yes, but we played to our strengths, at this level guys like Alan Trouten, Derek Carcary, Alex Pursehouse (on loan from Killie while Johnny Brown is waiting on a scan) and Paul McLean all have frightening pace which are ideal for the counter attack or just attacking football all the way from defence.
Tactical awareness is the key here.

Ross County and St Mirren vote down 12-12-18 proposal.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22151308

The Scottish Premier League has failed to achieve the 11-1 majority required to herald in a new league format.
Ross County and St Mirren voted against the proposal when the clubs considered a new 12-12-18 model for Scottish football when they met at Hampden.
Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne has accused the two dissenting clubs of "ruining Scottish football".
It is likely that the current make-up of 12-10-10-10 will continue for the next campaign.

I'm not really sure whether I see this as a good thing or not.

I've always said our structure lacks an competitive interest for most teams, particularly in the bottom half of the SPL. We need to have a decent promotion/relegation structure in place otherwise the league becomes stale (which is where we've found ourselves for some time now).

12-12-18 would have been better than what we have now, but it certainly wouldn't have been my choice for a long-term solution.
