Split Air con

ay. Looking forward to being able to keep the bedroom cool at night.

It's on my land, it's a small bit down the side of the house where a road goes for access to parking.

What are the rules/regs on that?
I have a side of my house that would be ideal for it, but its ~1 meter of my land from house to boundry wall (low, 2ft), then neighbours flowerbeds/side door. Only windows on that side are bathrooms.

Every year when the weather heats up I start thinking about this again.

My main concern is noise of the external unit as I live at the end of a cul-de-sac and, during warmer weather, it's very quiet and people obviously tend to have windows open and be out in their gardens so I'm worried that the external unit "drone" would cause problems. Just how quiet are they?

Logistically, I'd be looking at a single external unit powering dual internal ones, in the main and second (office) bedrooms. House is detached with alleys either side. Both bedrooms are on the same side, units would go on the same external wall either side of the stud wall separating them so fairly close together.
External unit would then be in the alley underneath the units so pipework/cabling basically out and straight down. Guessing ground level would be best for more noise suppression? The garage is actually underneath the second bedroom and thus on the inside of where the external unit would be, giving easy access to electrics to just be routed out through the wall.

If anyone has any ideas on noise levels or what I'd be looking at for such an install, cost-wise, that would be useful :)

Honestly, all 3 of our units on full blast is barely audible unless youre stood under them. If put on eco or a slow mode basically zero noise.

This. Ours are very very quiet, even on full blast during the rare 30C+ day they are barely audible stood underneath them. Next door commented the same. There’s even a night setting for the external unit, not that we ever need to use it.

People always think of the cheap, old, rattly units that you come across in Spain.

Yeah the modern ones, even the generic Chinese ones, are really quiet. With both internal units on full, I'd describe the exterior unit noise being similar to one of those large floor standing office fans on full. It's much more a 'wind' noise you hear rather than a buzzing, and as such it doesn't really travel.

On low, there is no wind noise, just a very gentle hum from the compressor that becomes basically inaudible when you're stood 3m+ away.

I think the external unit is supposed to be at least 1m from the boundary & you are only allowed 1 external unit to avoid needing planning permission. AS AC in the UK is fairly rare though it's probably not widely enforced.

Personally I'd put a cheap low picket fence/bamboo/bush or similar in front of that one that fronts onto the public pavement to disguise it a bit as a local busybody whose dog decides to give it a sniff on the way past could get offended, do some googling & decide to try & ruin your day.

I may put something up. It’s not on a road as such though, it’s access to the back of a few houses, so only neighbours driving in and out, no randoms walking past.

We want to tidy it up out there anyway, some nice gravel or something and a place to store our bins, so a little bit of fencing may come with that.

Forgot to add, just adjusted the temperature correction for the bedroom unit as it was running around 1-1.5C warmer than the set temperature. Will see if it improves it tonight.

What temp have you been running yours at night.
I find if I put mine on a few hours before bed it cools down the room and the upstairs enough.

I tend to leave both ones on it bedrooms with the doors open to cool the top of the house and it works well.

I don’t think I could sleep with it on all night

Night mode, 22C, a few minutes before going to bed, fixed rather than moving fins so that it doesn’t blow on me. I close the door since I don’t need the rest of the upstairs to cool down. On all night, although the unit powers down most of the night. Don’t hear it.

Let’s face it folks, it is times like this where the split aircon gives you that fuzzy feeling of having made the right investment. I’d go so far to say that within 10 years or so having it installed will be a given in the south east anyway.

Congrats my fellow visionaries!

Just had a loft conversion and I had a Daikin air con installed. Best decision we made. It’s super quiet both inside and outside. It has an app so I can easily adjust it and schedule times. Put it on last night and then make it turn off at about 2am. No more waking up in the middle of the night boiling or freezing your **** off and scrambling for a remote.

Had mine on last night for a chunk of time and made the sleep so much nicer! first time i've used the cooling in anger since install at the end of last year! Will be coming in handy over the next few weeks.

I guess time will tell, but I find that the ceiling fan in the bedroom is enough to keep me cool enough to sleep, that being said I don't suffer from hayfever so when I do need to open a window that is not a problem.

Our front room is absolutely unbearably hot though, 2 windows both 230wide by 130 height (double garage conversion) and south west facing. will definitely be installing an aircon in there asap.

My office is at a chilly 20 degrees.

Walked out wearing a hoodie, and the heat hit me like a blast furnace :D

God damn air con is good, and the solar panels are producing enough to cover all 3 units being on.

That’s great if solar panels can power them. You can’t beat it, I actually got a bit cold in ours earlier :p

I love having them all on a smart app too. Can control the whole house.

I'd definitely put a picket fence up around that going to the existing fence so its not so exposed.

All commissioned today, perfect timing. Lovely and cool
