Split Air con

is that all included? which model indoor unit?
if i were you i'd sign the contract now

4 way multi-split for £5.8k is unheard of nowadays

All Mitsubishi units (SRK20ZS-WF) 4 x 2kW units.

Deciding if we want to add on another unit for the kitchen. Was quoted an additional thousand for that.

Was going to wait for some more quotes but think we’ll go ahead with it. But waiting for the remortgage to clear through.

Maybe it’s cheaper cause the time of year? Not like we’d need it much now but will be glorious sleeping in a cool room next year… probably coldest summer on record now

for £1000 just do it, that is really cheap
especially as you'd need to get a 5-way multisplit outdoor unit, if that £1000 includes that...it's a steal

you won't find a better price, honestly

nope, air con installers are drowning in work at the moment
also the vat-free period is ending 31 march 2027, so everyone getting in before this ends

I did think it seemed like a good price on first glance but wasn’t sure if it was because I was expecting to pay more.

Told them we’d accept. Even if we do the kitchen as well it’s still under what we thought we’d be paying initially.

We’re thinking of converting the loft in a few years. Can you add onto systems with ease down the line?

yes but not really.
depends on your outdoor unit and how many indoor units it will support. you will need to find out what outdoor unit your installer has specced.

for example, i have the daikin 4MXM68A8 - this supports only 4 runs. ok if i have 3 indoor units and i can get a 4th in the future
but if i wanted a 5th, i will have to swap out the outdoor unit at great expense

it'll be the same for your MHI outdoor unit. every model is different, some multisplit outdoor units will do 2/3/4/5 - just need to check.
i think above 5 and you'll have to get a commercial outdoor unit = even more expensive and noisier

Thinking about it 4 is actually enough we'd likely just move the one from the office but that's a good 5-6 years away so not point worrying about it now!

Will definitely add the kitchen in though. Thought it would be pointless as it has really big doors to open if it was too hot but the flip side of that is the really big doors are also really big magnifying glasses and would heat the room up.

Looking forward to it though. Will be helpful both to heat individual rooms up but means next summer I can continue to ride indoors.

honestly if it really is that cheap...just get it done now. hedge against future price increases and whatever stock shortages.

Well we can't do it until January but they said if we agree the quote now they'll honour that until then. So we've decided to just get the 5 rooms done and be done with it.

Sensible decision.
For you (and the installer) once you sign the contract and pay the deposit they'll buy the equipment, so materially, there's no difference when it's installed because the price they are paying for the equipment is the current price.

@Scuzi and @tamzzy - many thanks for the replies!

I'll do the check but I think I'll be ok. The houses on my street are semis, except they are front-back semis as opposed to the normal left-right semis. My house is the back half of a semi, and all buildings are divided by 6 foot tall fences.

Changing my Haier units to Mitsubishi LN series and 6.8KW triple external unit.

Going with 1.8kw in red for the office and 2.5kw in white for the hallway and bedroom.

Garage install booked in for Thursday. Will be lovely to have the option to cool or heat the garage gym.
I've been thinking about doing this for years but never got to the point of going through with it. We already have air con (3 way split) and a ASHP for the house, so I wondered what the planning implications would be as it'd be our third external unit (though the garage is detached and separate). Like you, it's for a home gym which was unbearable during the summer.

What size unit did you go for?

do you have a detached home?
semi-detached = 1 external unit
detached = 2 external units

any more than that and you need full planning permission

if you're living in a semi-detached and already have two external units, hopefully your neighbours aren't grasses

House is detached, so no issues there. An air con unit on the garage would technically be the third for the property though, hence why I wasn't sure.

yeah, you'll need to apply for full planning permission for a third external unit. they'll definitely want to see the mcs020a noise calculations as well

Gone for a 2.5 kW, which will be added to the rear of my garage. My house is detached as is my garage, although it is shared with the neighbours’ garage.
