** spoilers ** English League Football [27th - 28th November 2010]

Today wasn't your usual slighly 1 sided officiating though. Atkinson was an absolute joke. I'm suprised you didn't get the pen when Hutton lost the use of his legs under no challenge whatsoever in the first half.

But like I said, we have ourselves to blame. Should have defended the 2 goals better and should have been comfortably ahead at HT too.

edit: Utd away in the FA Cup :o

Liverpool to win 2-1 away in the cup

City are going be fighting hard for that fourth spot, which is pretty annoying after we've finally got a good squad together, City just go out and buy one over the course of one season :(

We must have finally earned our crown as the come back kings :D

Dont worry Spurs wont be in top 4 at end of season either and neither will we :P
While talk of us being title contenders is a bit silly I do think we will repeat last seasons feat of finishing 4th. I think we're a better team than Man City & Liverpool and have closed the gap on Arsenal.

We have really suffered with injuries and yet still in there with a shout. While proving it's not all talk about our squad and the belief is growing aswell.

Dawson coming back and Woodgate could be like a new signing at xmas would help shore up the leaky defence. A few shrewd buys in the next window and who knows?

He wasn't as bad as that at all, he made some good calls on close decisions. You could easliy have finished the game with 10 men and the goal was quite close for offside... another day that's given.

What are all these joke one sided plays that only went our way?

Your currently a better team than us and city hell tbh i think most teams are better than city due to them all having large ego`s and out for themselves.

But injuries seem to be your problem and this year your finally in champions league so will be interesting to see how you handle the mid week games thus far you have done okay but their is that famous Europe effect teams run into as we all know.

I do think it will be between you and City i just wont be surprised if City sneak it but only just. I highly doubt we will be fourth id be happy with 6th and win europa if even possible and re-invest in squad during summer.

Can see four or five Prem teams going out in the first round of the cup...obviously one of Pool/Utd, but also think that Stoke, Wigan, Birmingham, WBA, and Blackburn have tricky draws.

Hate to say it but Woodgate will be back for a week and then get injured again. I do think its time he called it a day. It will be ideal when we get Dawson, I wonder who will be getting the captains armband when he returns, assuming he slots in for Kaboul. If that's the case I doubt he would drop Kaboul, but rather slot him in at right back, I'm not at all convinced with Hutton.

Countless free-kicks all game, the yellow to Meireles, the lack of a yellow for Hutton's dive (Konchesky's yellow was harsh too), the free-kick that led to your penalty, the award of the penalty (side on replay showed that contact was outside the box) and the penalty we should have had for the foul on Kuyt.

And out of interest, how could have we been down to 10 men? I honestly can't think of any red card offense or potential 2nd yellow.

edit: if you say that Ekotto got the ball for our penalty shout, it makes no difference. Something most people overlook is that just making contact with the ball doesn't make it a fair challenge. You've got to disposses the player, something Ekotto didn't do as Kuyt was still in possession when Ekotto brought him down.

How is he still in possession of the ball if the challenge takes the ball first?

Because the contact that Ekotto made with the ball wasn't enough to take it away from Kuyt

As I said, it something that a lot of people don't realise but simply making contact with the ball doesn't mean it's not a foul.

edit: Anyway, before it starts sounding like I'm making excuses, I'll leave it there.

We had the chances to have won today and should have defended better, but I honestly thought that Atkinson's display was as bad as I've seen in a very long time.

Go read the rules of the game.

It can still be a foul regardless of if the player got the ball or not.

Getting the ball doesn't automatically mean you didn't commit a foul.

Guys you can be anal and take things down to the letter of the law and quote ref 4.186 of section 8. Still doesn't change the fact it wasn't a penalty ;)

End of the day Spurs were the better side and deserved to win. Liverpool did themselves proud though, not many sides come to WHL lately and have a go like you did.

Far be it from me to back up Livermule whiners, but it always gets my goat to have people pursue arguments up until they can't win them and then come out with 'Yer well it doesn't change anything does it'... :o

That's nonsense, you can make a perfectly fair challenge and end up not dispossessing the player. The two things to consider are:

1) Did the player make the tackle from a fair position, e.g. the front or side?
2) Did the player make decent contact with the ball?

If both of these criteria are met (as Ekotto did) then there can't be a problem - he might have caught him with the follow through, but the follow through was part of the initial fair tackle.

Edit: I can see how this might be up for debate in those tackles where it's 50/50 whether the ball or man is played first but I can't see a problem here.
