** spoilers ** English League Football [27th - 28th November 2010]

Tis true, if your touch of the ball as a defender doesnt take it out of the attackers control and you subsequently take the attacker out then its a foul. Easy way to look at it is; if you didnt take the man out after getting a touch on the ball, would he have still had control of the ball. If the answer is yes then its a foul.

well, that was nice :D

the defeat resistance continues!

and a home draw in the cup to luton or charlton is also nice

They are overlooking the two rugby tackles that both could and should have been penalties. 1 by Carragher and the other by Konchesky.
Would have been 3-2 so makes little difference if the 1 Liverpool penalty and 2 Spurs penalties were given.

Please go read the rules re: tackles.

Very little is to to with winning the ball.

Really annoys me when people come out with "well he got the ball" as if it makes the tackle okay.

Just watching the highlights again and Konchesky didn't even bother tracking Crouch for their first goal. I can't believe how Hodgson can have the gall to criticise Johnson through the media when players like Poulsen and Konchesky get away scott free. Konchesky's a Championship level defender at best

He's shocking. Had Spurs got Lennon into the game more we'd have been raped and Konchesky wouldn't have finished the game.

He and Poulsen have got to be 2 of the worst players to play for us in the past 15 years.

What makes it worse is we swapped two promising youngsters and dumped Insua for him :o

If Hodgson's still here in January he can't be allowed a penny to buy any more of these Hodgson type players.

Ekotto actually scissored(not particularly badly) Kuyt on top of the tackle, its a VERY tight call on if it should be given, however the ref is supposed to know the letter of every law, I haven't read the rule book(nor the revision they make on a yearly(or weekendly) basis.

Getting the ball has literally nothing to do with if its a foul or not, because you can go in for a tackle, not get the ball and it still not be a foul.

Its difficult because Kuty didn't actually have control of the ball at any stage, to say he did is disingenuous, he was running after a loose ball and Ekotto got there before him, NOT at the same time, but his tackle was a tad dangerous, Kuyt touched the ball after Ekotto did and then Ekotto's follow through took him down, but Kuyt almost certainly played the ball out and would not have been in posession if he wasn't taken down. Very very hard call, I'd say by the letter of the law it should be a penalty, but it would be incredibly harsh largely because Ekotto was going after a loose ball, not one Kuty was currently in control of, and Kuyt got there late and rather ended up running through where Ekotto was going.

Either way, if Torres or Maxi actually remembered to kick the ball at the end of a run, they could and really should have been 3-0 up in the first half, Maxi was woeful throughout, Torres was poor, great pass for Maxi was the best contribution to the game, no idea what Maxi was doing. Same goes for Torres, he was clean through, then just took it way past the optimum shooting angle, was he waiting and praying for a penalty and red card, I really don't know, not shooting was criminal though.

As for Spurs closing the gap on Arsenal, I really don't think so, Arsenal closing the gap on Spurs, maybe :p Arsenal are worse, as we are every year, Spurs aren't improving, infact they are less consistant than last year.

The ultimate difference for me is, Spurs wanted to go out of the champions league early, loads of teams who break into Europe can do well, but league form almost always suffers. Fulham last year, great cup run, huge drop in quality in the league to go with it, happens to teams all the time. City have a bigger squad and less pressure to do well in Europa.

As the season drags on and those tough away CL fixtures happen in cold and bad weather, City can send out a ridiculously good reserve team while Spurs either give up, or have more tired first teamers when they come back from such games.

Spurs are probably the team who will be hurting most from European and other cup competitions, still in FA cup, I'd be sending out a stupid team and hoping to go out asap to have a good chance at 4th.

And paid ~£5m :o

Insua, who had tried to leave for over 2 seasons, promising youngsters, who wouldn't be starting premier league games, got Aurelio who will probably start ahead of Konchesky when he's fully fit, and bought a backup in Konchesky who was about the only left back available.

When you don't ignore that, I don't see how you can blame him, nor do we know if he actually signed anyone himself, Cole wasn't done by him, why are you so sure to attribute Konchesky to him.

Insua has almost left a half dozen times, he clearly wanted out, and, was rubbish. Who else should Liverpool have bought in for left back exactly.

I keep seeing Konchesky being mercilessly beaten up on by Liverpool fans, but no one can ever answer who they should have gotten instead, nor the fact that Johnson was 17million(or 18?) supposed to be first team, and was rubbish, Konchesky appears to be a short term solution with no money and no one else available, he's doing the best he can.

He had a go at Johnson(who admitted his own form was crap) to try to get better form out of him, how would the same help Konchesky or Poulsen?

I thought the tackle on Kuyt was a penalty, he had the ball before he was taken out and was in on goal, certainly a penalty

Back from the game.
The ref was a complete joke. Again. How this guy is allowed to ref in the PL is beyond me.
Are there any managers who are happy with this guy? i cant think of one.

Which part of the laws of the game cover this? Genuinely curious.

Think of it like this, one player goes in for a high ball to header it, another comes flying in karate kick style, he essentially kicks the guy in the face, studs up, and blinds the guy, but he happened to get the ball just before kicking the guy in a face.

A dangerous tackle is a dangerous tackle, a bad tackle is a bad tackle, getting the ball doesn't change if the tackle is a legal or illegal tackle.

Theres a line though, I don't know what the wording of probably a whole bunch of various rules that make up what is and isn't a foul.

Just getting the ball isn't, as some people think, the defining factor, its one of several factors, and is probably the least important factor.

IE first you consider, is the tackle extremely dangerous, if yes, red card, getting the ball doesn't matter till further down that list.

The problem is, are there enough refs most managers are happy with to actually maintain 10 games a weekend, probably not, most of them are pretty awful.

End of the day Spurs were the better side and deserved to win. Liverpool did themselves proud though, not many sides come to WHL lately and have a go like you did.

I beg to differ, Spurs were poor for the entire game.
We gifted you the game, unfortunately, and should have been 4-0 up by 10 mins into the second half.
-edit-
I should also add this is with players out of form, out of fitness and a useless manager.

Spurs fans, the only fans more deluded then City's

DM why do you keep insisting that Insua tried to leave for the past 2 seasons? It didn't happen and he in fact tried his hardest not to leave this summer too.

You really need to drop it. It's getting worse than the stuff about Riise being on £90k per week now.

@One More Solo; I'd imagine it's covered under 'tripping an opponent' and/or being a careless/reckless challenge.

At least most of the rest have good games and bad games. This guy is just awful 100% of the time.

And whilst im ranting.
Kon-****ing-chesky.
How this guy is managing to get away with impersonating a footballer is only bettered by the mystery of how Roy is managing to impersonate a manager.
He has no pace, no positional sense, he defends as poorly (sometimes worse then) Insua, he cant cross, his passing is poor when its more then 5 yards.
He's prone to make mistakes in tracking players, he cannot tackle, he cant head the ball.
What exactly does this player do? seriously?
Every week on the left he plays Fullback as well as Skrtel did at Right back a few years ago (Ie: Crap, and remember the abuse Rafa got!) But at least he was out of position!

Still, at least we'r set for a historic points tally of 48 points this year.
