**SPORE**

Is it dumbed down? It looked a bit aimed for Sims fans rather than us more 'hardcore' gamers?

pretty much, if you like the character/vehicle creation you'll like it.

But the rest of the time is spent very repetitively.

so far it seems like a bunch of flash based internet games strung together with a theme, unsurprisingly with each new stage of game comes essentially a new subgame which being different throughout means none will get as much effort/time as a single style of game.

Utterly basic interaction, AI, aims, goals, gameplay and so on, such a shame, over reaching at its best. If lots of people take 2-4 years to make a decent game, why make 4/5 or more little games in the same period that clearly won't be as polished or detailed.

UNfortunately the thing that brings down the best idea's is overreaching to much, and trying to get to much done, which tends to turn a great idea into a flop of a game. I mean many peoples favourite of recent times is COD4, ,very basic idea, completely done before, no over reaching, just focused on a great story and polished up an old engine to do it, end product, fantastic. Crysis, loads of time on engine, loads of time on physics, gameplay ok but story severly lacking. If anythign it shoudl tell you, the best games always have a intensive story that sucks you in, even if everything else is fairly simple. Really spore lacks the story that say a C&C style game gives you throughout various RTS missions. More levels in a C&C style spread out for each stage would work much better.

Played it as far as my patience could stand and got to civ stage, but I cant take it anymore. The game sucks, plain and simple. Far too tedious/repetitive and it seem to be aimed at 5-8 year old, feels like I'm playing with different colour lego pieces over and over and over again . Oh no look, it is asking me to build yet another body/house/vehicle/kitchen sink/town with lego pieces that end up looking the same after a while. If I wanted to constantly model/colour and repeat myself, I would have ordered Barbie Come Play With My Dresses for the PC.

Cancelling my order for this over hyped game.

Oh god, please let something decent come to the PC before the end of the year!

PS. I hardly ever bother to comment on bad/overhyped/buggy/short coming games, as there are so many, but with AoC and now this! Wasted enough money and precious spare time. Why couldn't spore be more like Civ4, I love that game, I guess I was hoping for too much!:(

Damn EA!

Last night tried to register account for my Galactic Edition, and get 'unknown error' and this morning it's 'key cannot be validated'.

Really don't want to play until the internet side is also up and running.

after the heat for this on this thread i'm worried about my copy which is due to hit me today. However i do have the mental capacity of a small child so i can only hope i'll enjoy it...

so..can anybody write a lil mini review?

so far its people sayitng' its rubbish' or 'im addicted'...

Well basically the 5 stages offer different variations of customization, in the first 2 you can change the creatures and the 3rd one at least you can build a little collection of huts and other things. The problem is that it plays like 5 different small flash games, going - "eat the small things, and get bigger", "charm/kill 10 races" etc etc, almost like WoW quests. Seriously lacks a shared goal throughout the different parts.

I've only reached the creature stage so far so I've not experienced a huge amount of the game so far, but I have been very impressed with what I've played so far.

Installation of a boxed retail copy was a cinch - installed and activated without a hitch. Personally, it doesn't bother me if I have to do a net-based activation.

Once loaded up, I logged into my EA game account (which is plugged into Spore's public content area) and was amazed at how many creatures had already been shared by other players.

I had a quick look at the creature creator (I hadn't tried it prior to buying the full game) and was pretty impressed with the creature builder and how you can customise things. I shared my first creation (Sqwarks) and then had a look at the game proper.

Graphically, it relies on artistic style rather than lots of HDR and eye-candy. The cell (water level) was very pretty and I had a fun time killing other spores and running away from the giant monstrosities. In laymans terms, it's like a glorified "snake" game where you have to gobble up food to evolve.

The creature (land) stage is similar in that you have to find body parts, befriend or destroy other species and find food to eat to stay alive. The AI of the other creatures is simplistic, but I wasn't expecting a huge living eco-system so I wasn't at all disappointed.

Spore is not a hardcore game by any means; it is aimed squarely at the same demographic as The Sims, and that's an awful lot of players if it catches on in the same way. It's certainly more a casual gamers title than a "sit there and play it for 8 straight hours" job and I reckon it's tried to aim for universal appeal.

I've enjoyed what I've played so far so it gets 2 thumbs up from me :)

That doesn't justify it being seriously annoying to play, the controls are horrible and it's terribly slow at times. Also micromanagement at the tribal stage just doesn't work, that's how far i got before i uninstalled.

Is there going to be a demo? Other than just the creature creator?

No.

No Spore demo, but expansions planned News

News by Eurogamer staff

15 August, 2008

Spore executive producer Lucy Bradshaw has ruled out a demo for Maxis' upcoming "Sim Everything", but has confirmed plans for expansions.

"We're not planning a demo of the game. Just the Creature Creator," she said during our live chat. "We've released a number of videos to show off the game."

On the subject of expansions - sort of an inevitability given Maxis' success expanding The Sims and its sequel - Bradshaw said this would happen but hinted at a few interesting approaches involving editors rather than simply new assets.

"When we started Spore, we were thinking about how we'd make an engine that had the possibility of expansion, so yes, we'll add to the experience," she said.

"I think, however, we have a very cool opportunity to take Spore in a few different directions too. The editors are so cool and fun, that we want to advance those as well as the gameplay that we put into the core game."

Among those additions should be the flora editor, which was axed from the full game. "We are not shipping with the flora editor. Sorry. It's something we eventually want to get out there as it is fun to work with," our speed-typing interviewee said.

I was ready to head out to get mine this morning because I have been having trouble buying things online but before I did so I thought I would check this thread and watch some video reviews by IGN and Gamespot. I think my original bad luck not being able to buy things online turned out to be a stroke of good luck...

Funny how things work out.

I haven't got my hands on it yet, but I spent 3 hours making creatures last night in creature creator. I think people need to wait till they get to the Space stage before saying it's a boring game.

It's like playing the tutorial island of a MMO and then saying you got bored before even trying the PVP and quests and massive landscapes. I also think a lot of people on here "hardcore gamers" were expecting this to be something that it's not. As soon as Maxis bought it, I knew that EA and Maxis would do their best to make it a game for the masses.

Unfortunately even the greatest of game ideas (including Spore), can be watered down like a wet weekend in York if it has the slightest possibility of attracting further sales.

For example, an evolutionary sim game with accurate timelines, social hierarchy's and total freedom to create monsters and butcher other tribes would appeal to hardcore gamers. However, they "cute" everything up and stick bright and bubbly cartoony gameplay in and then suddenly it appeals to every 10 year old in the country. It's a shame because the scope and determination to deliver the game came so close, yet I feel that the game hasn't been done justice from what I am hearing so far.

I don't mind, I think I will quite enjoy it, but I enjoy all kinds of rubbish games like Dynasty warriors and other controversial games.

hmmm a lot of people are on the Space Stage including me , sometimes i feel its boring other times i feel its retarded how the game constantly spam's uknown ufos on your planets. The ufo's are also unfair in their unit amount :o

If you go to war with anyone and it tends to happen a lot , prepare to fight every 3mins

Hmmm, something a patch could fix? I am reading two split opinions about how some love it and some hate it. Spore is like Marmite, which is a good thing....as usually a game hyped to this extent is usually utterly hated if it doesn't deliver!

I will be buying this tomorrow/Sunday.
