Start a new game on a new planet... you should then get the choise of going straight to Civ phase. Or... just let yourself be destroyed and see what options it gives you?

Stats dont stack which is a pity tbh as theres no reason to make a weird looking creatures outside of wanting to share cool stuff.
Edit: although I think health stats might stack
what so if I have one spike, there's no tactical advantage buying another?

Nope - or at least right now it doesnt seem so. In the cell stage there is because you can cover your body with spikes, so anything trying to eat you gets hurt. The creature stage doesn't have this kind of proximity damage though, only direct attacks.
so in creature mode, if you attack and then retreat and they give chase, you can still get attack from behind, so would it be beneficial to have a spiky ass?
I'm really not getting space combat... I'm stuck in a war with two factions who keep attacking my home world every few minutes which means I can't go to far because I need to be around to defend it all the time. 
My ally ship is useless, it just gets ripped to shreds in a matter of seconds so I can't counter attack. It seems somewhat unfair the computer gets multiple main ships and little ones to assit it. Am I missing something really odvious here? I just can't advance at the moment.

How do you get backup ships?
If you mean more ships in your fleet, talk to one of your allies.

Apart from spikes.
Creatures if attacking you bounce of your spikes. So make a fish thing with spikes all round and then they find it hard to attack.
the reason they didn't do more of heh positioning thing is it would require some uber uber programming.

Ahh I sorted it out by reading the guide Didnt realise that factories gave you money! Thought it was only the spices lol Looks like I did well to get to versus 1 other guy on just spices
After sitting for about 4hours stuck I did it in 30mins
Space looks fun but I need a break! Only started playing yesterday at 10pm and Im on space!

I didn't realise that factories gave money! I was wondering why the hell my full planets were literally doing nothing! Will have to do a bit of house demolition work and pump out those factories.
When you're creating cities. Red lines mean people will be unhappy, blue lines mean more money and green lines mean happy campers.
