Sri Lanka massacres

How did I miss this? This is sig worthy. By what metric are you going by for this? I didn't realise they were such a downtrodden religion.

Are alter boys not the most persecuted group of people for a while over the last 5 or so decades?

It's amazing how your world view lines up with the likes of Fox News - us whites/Christians are the victims boohoo.

Sig worthy for being correct? He said Christians, and the majority of those do not live in the west but it doesn’t mean they are not persecuted around the globe.

Oof.

I will put my hand up, I genuinely did not realise it was an issue.

My framing was more general (societal, cultural etc) rather than violence/deaths and from a Western point of view.

A little context though - how many more Christians are there than the next largest religion? I would imagine the figure to be in the hundreds of millions. I imagine China and India account for a large amount in the Pew report - where all sorts are persecuted.

Furthermore how is Christian persecution related to two prominent Christians describing Christians as 'Easter worshipers'?

No it wasn’t. You even quoted part of his post that mentioned attacks specifically in non Western countries.

If I didn't know so many were persecuted in the East - how else would I be framing it. You've lost me.

I mentioned Fox News and Tucker Carlson and how they play up how whites and Christians are under attack in America - hence my framing from a Western point of view.

Perhaps the fact you didn’t know shows how biased your news sources are?

I tend not to follow events at in much detail with the likes of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. I am aware of similar issues with Iraq/Syria (Yazidis) and Nigeria (Boko and the decades long tit for tat bloodbaths between Muslims and Christians) though, just didn't realise the problem was on a much larger scale.

You didn't realise it because you dont follow events yet felt you knew enough to call my post a joke and say it was sigworthy?

Now what does that say about you?

The persecution of Christians is very real and very significant. In the English speaking west it's typically name calling, some social media scuffle, being ignored or some victimisation (at work/school etc). In many other (including developed) regions its loss of social position (home/family/job), imprisonment, torture and death.

Interestingly and apologies if I have missed this being picked up already, this BBC article describing a Christian Sri Lankan man who prevented a bomber entering their church at the cost of his own life very clearly frames it as 'worshiper' not Christian.

At no point in the article or headline can they bring themselves to use the term Christian.

Name calling? What? The only time it’s ever brought into question is NI related issues.

Besides that the only other time I’ve even seen it mentioned is the occasional ‘religious jewellery’ restrictions in jobs, a discussion that has mild merit.

What I believe you’re doing, is superimposing countries outwith the wests sphere (that you almost certainly don’t care for unless it’s convenient, but hey ho) and their usually tribal conflicts, onto some fictional image of western persecution that simply doesn’t exist at that level.

Unless you want to say women’s rights and recognition of homosexuality in law is persecution? (Because I really can’t think of anything else it’s at odds with)

@StriderX exactly, I was commenting on the disparate perceptions of Christian persecution as highlighted over the last couple of pages.

I.e. typically at worst over here it's finding ways to ignore them and more recently not using the title Christian eg the BBC article above and social media commentary, except in a negative framing eg the fox news article a few pages back.

Lmao, with the Obama/Hillary tweets I thought people were just looking for something but that headline and the caption on the photo is silly. Clearly they’re actively avoiding using the word. Why?

I avoid using the word bigot, or poorly educated, or misinformed unless I really have to. You've been hiding under the largest possible rock if this 2000 year old fact has passed you by.

@StriderX it defies belief that you wouldn't class bullying in school or the workplace as persecution. Most children growing up in schools even in the UK, during the 80s and 90s would avoid telling anyone that they went to church for fear of being picked on and socially excluded.

Misinformed in this instance, I know I overreacted and have apologised. I also conflated the perception/issue of Christianity under attack in America with the persecution around the world.
