SSD advice ...

Depends on how much money you have and what you deem to be of value.

I bought myself a first generation SSD just a week ago, 32gig for £45 new from that auction site and I was very happy with it so I bought a second and raid them.

I will buy a larger 256gig drive when the prices come down a tech moves forwarded.

Depends how long you want to wait, a lot will happen this year and you'll be able to get much much better drives come December, it really is technology still in its infancy.

Thats what i thought , new technology ...can only get better and cheaper !!
Im not in any rush really so probably best to wait and see what happens over never 6 months ...also windows 7 will be out so be good time to upgrade to ssd :)

SSDs are moving very quick. If you want one then go for it but just bear in mind that after a year or something, there will be ones out which are much larger, quicker, etc :)

I went for one but like playing with new things :D

That's actually a reason for getting an SSD now :p
If you've spent so much money on having the fastest PC, why skimp on the HDD? You won't experience it to its full potential until you do, just seems almost like you're wasting it ;)

TBH, there will always be larger and quicker drives around the corner, no matter when you buy them, Hard Drives are still getting faster, larger and cheaper and look how long they've been around. As soon a SSD's hit mainstream, the tech will move so fast you'll have trouble keeping up.

If the difference between SSD & "Standard HDs" was night and day right now then sure - go for it, get maximum performance.
SSD can be impressive, but certainly not night & day at the moment.

I disagree. Complete night and day difference. Give me 2 identical pcs, one with hd, other with ssd, and I could tell you which was which no problem.

i think i will wait just a bit longer , only just discovered raid !!! lol

Well that's a shame. TBH raid is not all it's cracked up to be and there are no hdd's that when raided beat out an ssd. SSD's are expensive true, but so is an i7, x58 mobo, 6gbs ddr3 tri channel ram and gfx card.

yes i know what you mean , ssd's are def faster than 2 hard drives in raid ....think i would rather wait till the price becomes a bit more sensible and the technology advances ...
The price per gig is ridiculous on ssd's at the moment ..
things can only get better !!

I was tempted by SSD but the price is just too high per GB at the moment.

I will get an SSD when they are much, much cheaper.

Maybe when WD, Seagate, etc start mass producing the prices will become more reasonable.

LOL, you can tell which is which?! I should jolly well hope so. That's the thing about 'night and day' - very very different from one another!

Mmm tend to disagree.

Been using a Corsair P256 for the last two weeks.

Honestly, would have to say that the difference is night and day from a normal hard drive.

Ridiculous prices. Absolutely. £500 for a hard drive strikes me as vaguely insane (it is the 256 gb one though and thats overkill to be honest)

But then, hand on heart. I actually think now that if you are building a really top of the line PC (which I would define as 2K plus). Then I think you have to get an SSD, or really, there was no point in speccing it out with all the other goodies, because your system will simply bottleneck at the hard drive.

You can get a fast, second generation 128gb samsung ssd for about £270.

That is money MUCH better spent then on any other upgrade I can think of.

You would DEFINITELY notice the difference.

Programs load instantly. Everything is dramatically faster.

For example, Firefox used to take about 1 minute 20 seconds on my old PC to load. On the new one its instant. Same with everything.

Thats the hard drive at work, because nothing else is being taxed. The cpu is idling along at under 5%.

Its the difference between mythical performance gains in 'tests' and the real world, where you are not playing games 24 hours a day; but actually use firefox, photoshop, word and excel etc.

In the real world the ssd has made using my PC a MUCH more pleasant experience.

So yep. Get one.

Would 64GB SSD be large enough for windows + games?

I'm planning my new gaming rig and don't know if I should go for SSD or traditional. Music and movies are stored on an external.

Depends entirely on how many games you have/want installed at the one time. Personally, it would be nowhere near enough space for me - my Steam folder alone is near 50GB, and that's small compared to many of the peeps on here!

I'll probably get away with using a 64GB drive for my OS and most frequently used apps (excluding games).
