SSD in my Mac Pro *updated with performance figures* (and video)

Hi

I am thinking about moving my Crucial M225 256GB SDD to my 13” 2010 Mac BookPro.

The SDD (firmware1920) has been running windows 7, should I re-format/wipe it in windows first before moving it to my MBP?

What do people use as a SSD utilities for GC, wiper, optimal partition alignment?

Crucial Wiper tool for Garbage Collection does not work for the Apple OS X support, any suggestion of a tool which I can use?

thanks

Simon

Secure AtA erase it using hdparm command and a Linux live CD. It'll be easier for you if you're doing it on a pc because you have to hot swap the drive.

Could anyone explain to me the differences between all the different VERTEX 2 SSDs? Which one should I be buying?

I would get the new ones, but the olds ones are still fantastic.

Either the 25nm (new) or the Vertex 2e are the ones you should be buying.

Cheers, hoping to get one in the next couple of weeks. Will be placing it in my 2007 macbook to see if I can give it a new lease of life for a couple of months. Hopefully they will release some new MBP's soon then I can transfer it to that, or if those come with MBA style SSD's then I'll move it to my iMac or windows desktop.

I've just got my hands on an Intel X25-M drive; apart from the guide on iFixit, is there anything else I need to know before I start taking my MBP apart?

Just pop in your new drive. Boot from your OSX DVD (alt button at start up). Format your drive in diskutility (from the menu at the top) then run the installer. Done.

So no need to secure erase, no need to update the firmware, no need to take it out for dinner and a movie?

How about Snow Leopard? I take it the upgrade disc I got from Apple is merely that - I've got to install from the OSX DVD that came with the MBP first and then run the SL disc?

If it's a new drive you don't need to secure erase. If it's a used drive you might want to but it's near impossible to do on a mac, you'd have to hook it up to a pc.

Firmware wise you can set up bootcamp after you've installed OSX and flash it then.

Intel Drives are vegetarians so keep that in mind.

As for OSX, I think you can install straight from the SL disk but I'm not 100% sure...

Oh, hooking it up to a PC isn't an issue, but it was a new, sealed drive. If I attach it to the MBP in a USB caddy and it says I need to 'Initialize' it, that's a fresh drive, right?

Can I flash it from a USB caddy attached to a PC? I don't want/need Bootcamp taking up vital space on the SSD!

Bah. Well, at least they aren't vegans.

Ah, I wonder if anyone knows for sure?

Yeah, sounds about right, just need to put it in your mac then.
Just remember that ATA secure erase isn't the same as the secure erase option in MacOSX disk utility. Using that can shorten the life of you drive and will make it slower. ;)

You might be able to, but I'd never risk flashing a drive through a 3rd party USB caddy. Too expensive if it bricks it. :p
You can always get rid of bootcamp after you've flashed the drive, it's upto you though.

Yup, still picky eaters though.

Just try it, the worst that can happen is it'll ask for your restore disks, it's not going to take you more than 5mins to find out.

Here are my results:

This is mine now a couple of months on FYI:

Gash, my OCZ Vertex2E in my macbook pro blew up this morning :( Had to rip the Crucial M225 out of my mini and I'm now using that.

Feels a lot slower
