Hi all,

I'm trying to setup Windows XP on an old Gigabyte 965P S3 board using a Crucial M4 SSD.

I know I need to set the mode to AHCI - But when I do this the SSD is not being detected by the motherboard?

Common problem?

Should I try the 'Gigabyte SATA ports'?

Thanks

you have to pre-install the ahci drivers if your using xp,save them to a usb stick and install them when installing windows

be sure to use latest mb bios too

download the ahci drivers from motherboards website, put them onto a usb stick formatted in fat32

does the drive show up in the bios? when set to ahci?

Honestly, going by my ancient 965P DS3 i found in the loft, its just flaky with SSDs and suffers the same problems you mention, with a Vertex 2E when i tried it about a yr ago. I don't usually advise it but a cheapo PCIe marvell card might help your situation though it'll be limited on a PCIe 1.1 x1 slot, still better than the ICH7.

Can't put xp sata drivers on usb for the xp install.

You need to use raid slipsteamer or driverpacks. Net

...ok, so I've now tried it again with a Gigabyte P35 DS4 Board and I'm getting the same thing! :(

So what is it? Are these Chipsets too old to work with SSDs properly?

The only way I can get it to detect the SSD in AHCI mode is if I use the Gigabyte (purple) ports... any downside to this?

Thanks

For XP, yes, you'll have to slipstream the intel ahci drivers into the XP install.

XP doesn't work as well with SSD's compared to Windows 7, because there's no built in TRIM features with XP.

I think this should work, not used it in a while..

Copy your XP disc to C:\XPCD\

Run this tool on it to add the intel drivers (might as well add all the drivers)
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/85842-raid-slipstreamer-x86x64/

Then run nlite on it and only use the 'build ISO' option, don't mess with other things unless you've used it before.

Burn the ISO to disc either using nlite or using IMGBurn.

Thanks, but how is the xp install going to work, if the SSD is not even being picked up in the bios.? (by the intel controller)
