SSD prices climbing fast!

What the hell is going on with these rebranded Western Digital SSDs, now going under the SanDisk Optimus name.

£800 for 4TB???

Rebrand them and double the price....insane.

When I was eligible for a set of Withings digital scales with my qualifying Samsung Galaxy Ultra watch I had to phone them to get them to validate it. They never got back to me in the timescale they said they would and I had no idea if they ever would have if I hadn’t taken action myself.

after the cashback it's still around £350-ish

Exactly and this time last year it was £220 before any cashback.

Also only PCie 4 and £350 after cashback for 4TB. PCie 5 was pretty normal at the £350-400 4TB a few months ago with latest NAND and PCie 5 controllers and DRAM.

Also hate these cashback ways of them reducing prices as they hope people forget to claim them or hope they can't claim them as they either purchased them from wrong place, region or claim too late.. Instead of all participating stores just reducing the price and Samsung and the store deal with the cashback claim not every single customer. Ridiculous and should be made illegal.

Greed and should be avoided. 8TB WD SSD drives were £500 at one point and now insane price. SanDisk have become disgusting with their prices for ssds and memory cards. One to avoid like the plague till they wake up as their prices are double everyone else's right now even in this mess. True colours have come out for this disgusting company.

This is why I don't trust it. They should just price it minus the cashback at point of sale

Had other companies do the same Asus, MSI all either ghost you or come back with high demand and takes time rubbish and in the end ghost you and gets sent right back for a refund and never again. Not playing them games and time wasting anymore with these idiotic companies. As you said stores part of the promotion should have the ability to do it at point of sale or otherwise refuse to be part of the promotion as it only causes them headaches when their customers have to fight for the cashback and in the end ask for a refund and send the item back.

If they're made illegal then they probably wouldn't discount the price at the retailer because fewer people would buy at the higher prices. As long as you follow the rules of the cashback promotion you shouldn't have any issues, it's usually user error. I did a Samsung cashback claim recently on an S26 Ultra and I got an email saying the claim had been validated less than an hour later.

Correct they wont it's not like the old days when retail had great relationship with manufactures and would credit them.

The US has always done it that you have to go claim not discounted at retail.

People dont want the hassle as this is how society is now but I agree with you most times its a simple online form or you just email and copy of few details and done.

My Samsung Evo 870 1tb has been accepted for RMA and the UPS label and paperwork emailed. Will drop it off tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how long it takes and the outcome. Their EU service partner have been very good to deal with by email and getting to this stage, so fingers crossed.

Nice. So unlike Samsung US (or whoever handles north america) and tries to worm out, samsung europe are doing the right thing.

That remains to be seen. The drive arrived today and it is my drive back, not a replacement. I will try it over the weekend but it shipped back the same day it was received and I had no comms about their testing or findings. Definitely not trusting it with any valuable data, if it works.

:(.

Sounds ominous, iirc that's what Samsung did to louis rossmann, just sent back the same drive, with nothing done to it.

That's probably how they improved their rapid turnarounds, just pop it straight back in the post to the sender, having closed their fault testing departments. :D

Forgot to add, the very best of luck there.
They might have resolved your issue.
Let's hope.

Keep us posted.

Hope so. Will get it plugged in shortly, just had a family outing for flu jabs. Will update in a bit :).

Edit: got a bit sidetracked and haven't got around to it yet, probably leave it until the morning unless my son has another bout of insomnia.

When I bought my 4TB Samsung 870 EVO in 2023 it was £189. On one site today that same drive is listed as being £1364.
Don't fret, it is in stock..!

Goodness knows we have had some interesting times in this tech world, from Floods to pandemic to mining and so on..... However, even in those dark times the retail business still mattered to those businesses and manufactures whose hardware was compromised at the point of sale, in terms of availability..
But to get to such a situation where increases of that magnitude are possible is more than just surreal. If this continues there will not be any entry level PC's nor much of a retail market at some point.
And, so far, all of those manufacturers who makes the products for the storage, RAM and GPU's etc are more than thriving to no longer care.

I bought a Gen5 Samsung 9100 Pro for... £325 with a £75 mail in rebate, which they did promptly. They now go for £750 to £1k....
