Hi all, how much quicker is a ssd to a sata2?

I'm looking at the OCZ 60GB Vertex Plus SSD and trying to compare the 185MB per second Read Speed but normal sata drives have a different way of factorising speed?

cheers

as a general rule of thumb ssd's are faster than mechanical drives. Sata is the interface used for both mechanical and solid state drives. Sata 3 gives more bandwidth so your best to look for a sata 3 SSD.

I take it you mean SSD over conventional mechanical drives? As SATA is a connection interface, that both SSD's and mechanical drives have.

The long and short of it is, an SSD will in 99% of cases be faster than a standard mechanical drive in all tests..

sorry yeah thats what I meant :)

My board (Asus p5q pro) does not suppoort sata 3 I don't think. Its it worth going from a sata2 mech. drive to a sata 2 ssd or just wait until I upgrade the board next?

SATA3 SSD's are backwards compatible with SATA2, so you could go SATA3 now, run it as SATA2 until you get a new board with the required connection?

thanks thats a good idea, I did not realise they are backwards compatible.

Could you please recommend one, 60gb minimum, 120 preferred :)

Crucial M4, or if you can get your hands on one a mushkin chronos, both come in 60/64 and 120/128gb flavours.
