SSDs & AHCI?

Im still using a board that doesn't support AHCI mode hence im reluctant to install a SSD. Running a SSD without AHCI seems wrong. Im waiting to see what Intel come up with in their new generation SSD's, then I will change my board at the same time.

DragonQ - what's your take on running a SSD on IDE mode? Im running an Asus P5KPL-CM by the way.

Not sure about real-world difference but I think in benchmarks you get a 10-20% drop in performance depending what area you're looking at (e.g. 4kB reads, 8kB writes, etc.) when using IDE mode rather than AHCI mode.

Certain controllers are better than others also, Intel's ICH9/10(R) being the best generally. Avoid using SSDs on Marvell or JMicron controllers, always use Intel or AMD if available. If you've got a poor controller and can only run in IDE mode, you'll not get the best out of your SSD.

Cheers DragonQ. Will hold off until my new build where I can select a decent board to run a SSD. Any builds I have done for customers all had AHCI as default but I guess my board is getting old these days. E8400 is holding out well but.

i run my 60GB OCZ VERTEX2 SSD ON IDE and performance was still blistering compared a mechanical HDD.

AHCI is overrated and hardly noticeable in everyday use. If the option is there to use AHCI then use it - but it is by no means essential.

Im my bios I can choose IDE, Raid or ACHI mode.

I have Raid selected because I'm using Raid 0 F3s, would my SSD be in IDE or Achi mode on the Raid setting?
