Hmm well the game now works, I had to apply some registry changes it seems, not sure whether to now try the mods or just leave it as is

Was it just the 4gb enabler you used or did you do anything else ?

It's up to you personally, play the game and see how you feel about it, find what you do and don't like about it. Mods like AMK and Oblivion Lost do a lot of stuff to the game. NPCs throw grenades is a really good one, a very surprising when they do.
I would say play through it once, and then try different mods.

I think I had applied the 3gb enabler to the .exe and also then done the registry tweak in order to get it working, although I think it was the registry changes that finally did it.

Cool stuff

I just experienced my first blow-out in the AMK mod, and it was **** scary

^Killed by these military guys as they took shelter from the blowout, i did shoot first, though
