standby - who uses it?

Sleep mode on my Mac for the win!!

I love the way the hard drive stops so I can carry it around, and boot it up in <5 secs :D

If you are carrying it about it would lose power and it wouldnt be in standby anymore. Unless your talking about a laptop, in which case brings up the question, why would you wait for the hdds to stop to move it? The way your post is worded, you'd think hibernation or shutdown doesnt stop the hdds moving :p

It is a Laptop, yes.

I put it in my travel bag whilst it is in sleep mode, so I can simply wake it up when I get to my destination.

I feel more comfortable knowing the drive is not moving when it's in transportation, and I can simply wake it up if I get a business call

As most of the above posts suggest, standby is for laptops. :p

Need to figure out if I can change the power button on my Mac Mini from Standby to Shutdown. Silly thing. :)

Every night. My pc takes about 3 mins to shut down and similar time to turn on cus it's so full of ****. I usually watch a dvd when i go to bed and turn it off as soon as i feel myself falling asleep so i want it off asap. Only reason i started using it was because i have a big "sleep" button on my keyoard. :)

I use it occasionaly, I tend to just hibernate my laptop, doesn't take much longer and I don't have to worry about it turning its self on and melting inside the laptop case :)

Folding for team 10!

(althought mrs fatiain makes me turn my PC off at night now :()

I used to hibernate my pc quite a lot, until one day when windows started hanging every time I tried . Now I just leave it on.

I don't use it at all.

I think it's a bit sad that some people leave their computers on through the night because they think it will save the components and save them waiting 30 seconds - don't you have the slightest respect for the environment or your electricity bills?

i just hibernate, my laptops hibernate when i close the lid, and my main pc hibernates when i press the sleep button on the kyb or remote, my download machine however gets turned off

Desktops are on or off. The laptop usually ends up in standby or hibernate if it's going to be away from the mains for a while - you just don't want to know how long a laptop takes to boot when it's running a full on copy of DB2 Enterprise Server :(
