US: Star Trek: Discovery

I get the impression that much of the research that drove technology forward was Starfleet funded and researched. When they crashed and burned there was very little. And without Warp people fell back on tried and tested, reliable and easy to maintain and repair technology.

Over a thousand years though? Through multiple different empires and sectors. As I say we've already seen different modes of travel to Warp that are faster in some cases. Slipstream drive was just one such technology that we know at least one species cracked and I believe the federation used in the 2nd to last episode of Voyager.

It's very telling though how they keep saying how advanced things are yet we've not seen anything more than a generational improvement over what we know. When they visited Earth they got shot by an advanced defense platform using a thousand year old quantum torpedo, really?

More than anything this just smacks of a lack of creativity by the writers.

Is there any reason you aren't using spoiler tags for new episodes despite seemingly being aware that you are giving some (minor) spoilers? :p
Sorry, got suspended for a day because of Feek :D

Normally I would but I considered them exactly that - very minor details that I considered barely spoilers. I’ll tag any thoughts in future for sure.

Yes, didn't see them as spoilers.

Only reason i am watching is its new.... Pretty much a captive ordinance for fans of the genre. Its still slightly better than Picard though.... that really was bad. Sad state of affairs for sure.

Its as if the writers think the federation needs to die, having a something so good and beneficial must fail because its so good and beneficial.

Too full of old white men making the decisions. Had to die.

Just kidding. I don't get the impression they are making any statement with the collapse of the federation.

I enjoy Star Trek Discovery.
But there's no "Star Trek", it's just a Sci-fi show.

I've never really watched Star Trek before, but after I watched the first season of Discovery I watched the entire original series, animated and films and I'm currently towards the end of Season 4 of Next Gen.

At this point I'd say the Orville was closer to what I would consider Star Trek.

Enjoyable episode. more comedy moments and overall good sci-fi entertainment. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Great episode, especially the ground rescue - very reminiscent of the Adama Manoeuvre!

For those unfamiliar, a legenadry move pulled off by Adama in BSG that would forever go down in history and become a thing all on its own!

I really feel like I don't know anyone on the ship apart from like 5 people......

in the old star tek you new pretty much everyone, feels like discovery is about the ship, not the people on board

Talking about the ship I am surprised no one else has mentioned this...

so now the discovery’s warp nacelles just float about in space beside the ship? I can understand the idea of programmable matter but surely there has to be energy transferred to the nacelles for them to generate the warp field maybe we will get a convoluted technobabble episode pseudo explanation in the future. Lol now I think about it I am almost certain we will do.

What in the heck are you talking about?

You have just marched into the thread with some random statement unrelated to the context you've quoted lol.

Great analogy sums it up perfectly.

The wokometer is hovering around 85% currently for it.

should be 100% I don't think there's a single straight white male in the main cast, I'm not sure Saru counts

Not that any of that matters as right now the only thing keeping me interested is Michelle Yeoh

I have a feeling that her issues will stem from the fact that she is from the mirror universe and the Admiral said that they had not had anyone from there come over in years(decades\centuries). Maybe what caused the burn or something related to that caused the ability to cross over to be closed and its resulting in her memories somehow merging with the original Georgiou. Did the burn also happen over there? hummmm

Who is ironically a horrific actress. Every time she opens her mouth to awkwardly deliver her terribly written lines in that stilted English accent, with that ridiculously over the top "LOOK HOW COOL AND BADASS I AM" attitude, I groan inwardly.

She's good at action stuff though, of course. I think they should have given her less lines and screen time though as it just detracts from everything else she does.

Anyone watched this week's edition of the Michael Burnham show?
Yes, unfortunately. Why can't I stop? (I guess re-watching hundreds of hours of original Trek will do strange things to people).

I'm finding this worst than seasons 1-2 somehow; perhaps because for me, it was easier to pretend it wasn't really trek then.

The sad thing is, I really like the actress when she's doing comedy.

Garbage episode, really garbage, but +1 for Nimoy flashback.

Tilly promoted to No 1? Yes, but a bumbling, nervous wreck incapable of making decisions as the second in command of a starship who is responsible for the lives of the whole crew. Not forgetting she has jumped several ranks to do so.

Burnham - why is every line delivered as a whisper and with a tear?

Every episode so far has people in tears and hugging it out - what the actual frig?

Annoyed :)
