Star Trek: Picard

What other goodies are from daystrom i wonder, i have been thinking since they said about AI i was thinking of the old m5 unit stuff and if that was totally scrapped or developed more.

The only thing I don't like is the swearing, it's so un-Star Trek, it's just wrong. And I swear like a docker myself so it's nothing to do with that. It's just not Star Trek ethos to f bomb, at all.
Agreed and it was jarring - however willing to give it a pass as it was ad-libbed by Patrick himself :)

“That moment actually wasn’t scripted that way, Jonathan [Frakes, who directed the episode], Ed [Speelers], and Patrick [Stewart] had created this incredibly intimate moment between a father and son, they were rehearsing and what they had crafted was so genuine and so intense, that came out in the moment. Patrick said it and felt it, and it was real, a couple of times.

When I got the director’s cut, I was so taken aback by it, but it was so real, and everything you do as artists, as writers and actors, even as editors, is authenticity. That’s the thing you want to feel. I was really torn because hearing that word come from your childhood hero, Captain Picard, it throws you. But wow, is it powerful, and it’s a moment between a father and son.”

What a cracking series. Every episode is brilliant. So many people will miss this because of the previous seasons.
That might be true, I have some gripes about Picard as a series (mostly around the aesthetics) but in terms of story telling it's far better then the previous seasons and far better then the dog droppings that we got served up in STD.

I agree that it looks very ‘slick’ which makes it feel likes it’s presenting as a Hollywood blockbuster rather than something like Next Generation.

It doesn’t need to look bombastic and if anything, it takes away from the drama slightly.

I enjoyed this weeks episode :)

Maybe a little, but it is genuinely good if you're not the type to sit there trying to find fault with everything.

This. We really enjoyed the last episode. Sure it ain't up there with the best from TNG, DS9 or Voyager but it is still very good. Especially when you compare it to season 1 and 2 which was crap.

I'd say no, i'm enjoying it because it's what I wanted it to be from the start. S1 & 2 Weren't really Star Trek, they felt more like generic Sci-Fi.

I think the issue was the removal of the usual ensemble cast and putting in too many characters that deliberately go against the grain, with a narrow focus on them.

Raffy by herself is probably not a terrible character, but her Series 1 appearance was incredibly jarring in the Star Trek universe. I get what they were going for (nobody is perfect - I actually quite like the inclusion of such a character conceptually) but swapping in her for the usual ensemble cast and then trying to force onto the audience that her and Picard were close friends just didn’t work.

I still haven’t really warmed to Raffy but the impact is lessened because we now have the more rounded cast. So now there at least some scope for us to warm to her, rather than everyone thinking “wtf is this” as we watched series 1.

I don’t particularly like the new Captain that has a beef with Picard… he seems like a total jerk for Star Fleet.

Season 3 is making me overthink and ask questions. I beginning to wonder how the Changelings have managed to retain their solid appearance to the inside as well - right down to blood and organs. Perhaps when Odo re-joined the Great Link did they over time improve what he had learnt/experienced - as he spent a great deal of time as a solid. Also the Section 31 cure synthesised by Dr. Bashir that Odo finally carried to the Founders - has it mutated or changed them somehow? Quite a bit of time has passed since. I know they mentioned a faction unhappy with the treaty outcome/conditions of the Dominion War.

What of the Shrike (reminds me a bit of the So'nar ships from Insurrection merged with the Scimitar from Nemesis) and Vadic? - I assume with the repairs after the ten pin bowling incident they will be back...and do we have a villain within a villain (changeling co-existing with a humanoid?)

This is where I get totally lost, I never watched Deep Space Nine past the first couple of seasons so I have no idea what this Dominion War with Changelings is all about. I keep saying one day I’ll get round to watching DS9 (especially now it’s on Paramount +) but there’s never enough hours in the day!

DS9 like TNG had a difficult IMO first two seasons. The beginnings of what was to come in DS9 happen in Season 3 with hints and talk of the Dominion regarding the Gamma Quadrant. Things ramp up in Season 4.

There are some really great episodes and plots involving Garak (a simple tailor) with The Klingons, The Cardassians and the Romulans all getting involved - with the war dominating the last three seasons.

How Star Trek imagines the future of humanity and Earth itself.
To understand the allure of Star Trek, it’s necessary to understand the ways its creator Gene Roddenberry and later writers conceived of humanity’s future. While Earth is, for all intents and purposes, a utopia during the time of the various Star Trek series, it took a long, bloody road to get there. 21st-century Earth was embroiled in many conflicts, including what would become known as World War III (2024–2053), which was sparked by a litany of issues, including anger over genetic manipulation and the Eugenics Wars
All story explained here:

2024 you say? Might just end up being accurate with the way things are going with Russia and China at the moment.
