Except it's not an Amazon original, it's made by CBS in the US who ordered a second season before the first had even launched. It's on Amazon internationally but they don't make it. And according to Hollywood Reporter CBS has ordered two more seasons.
Amazon funded it is not only the distributor. Otherwise Picard was never going to be made. Initially Secret Hideout went to Netflix with Picard and kicked them out of the door.
They went to Amazon which said that they do not like what was planned and need changes. By that time the series was in production and required major re-shoots which we already saw in between episodes. Some episodes on Picard are from 2-3 episodes with re-shoots. Thats why the series is so disjointed.
Hollywood Reporter, reports what Secret Hideout says. Which is always "positive headlines" trying to find investors. There is none now. Without Amazon money they cannot make Picard like with Netflix money cannot make STD S4 or Section 31. The only product directly funded by CBS only, is the Lower Decks for Nickelodeon. Nothing else is in production because of Shari Redstone wants to clean up the ST mess with the multiple licences.

@JRS is an ongoing saga the whole thing. Is not a single article that would answer a simple question. Secret Hideout (aka Alex Kurtzman) feeds exclusives to the media to keep interests high, pushing for more money that dried out.
This is one of the best reputable channels to get understanding why Star Trek is in this mess.

I will stand only on this. Shari Redstone has decreed numerous times that wants Star Trek cleaned up after the merger (December 2019) of CBS/Viacom again. So nothing under the "Star Trek alternative licence" has to be in production for a year and she personally kicked out of her office Alex Kurtzman when he went for money earlier this month to continue his Star Trek projects.
If you do not know what the Star Trek alternative licence is, which all productions after the end of Enterprise are made (hence they look sht and so totally different), you need to catch up if you are a real Star Trek fan...
