Star Wars Squadrons

OK, did the plug and unplug suggestion, so my thanks for that.
Eventually got my stick and pedals mapped. Simply couldn't manage to also get either of my throttles mapped, but at least that got me into game with the ability to fly.
On a positive note, my joystick had no deadzone issues.

So, got a game in.
Guess I'm just spoiled by Elite, IL2 and DCS. Just came across as a bit "meh" after all the hype.

Infact, I'm going to be a bit more damning than that.
There really doesn't appear to be a lot more to do than straight combat, which rather reminds me of the Elite arena combat sub-game. The problem with that being that I think I actually prefer the combat in Elite and for that matter, I think that Elite looks better.
So sure, it's got Xwings in it and is set in the Star Wars universe (always worth a few points), beyond that, it's like a "different" (in some ways better, in some ways worse) version of Elite arena, but without the rest of the Elite game.

On the plus side, the cockpits do look pretty good.
Making up for that there's no G effects, so pull as hard as you like in any direction you want.
That very much has implications for flying styles. In a real aircraft, you'd need to take into account your own capabilities as a pilot, i.e. roughly -3g to +9g. When that limitation doesn't exist, that favours the type of "instant look" that comes from using a mouse in an FPS, certainly so over the need to be smooth and show both your ship and your own body some mechanical sympathy.

In short, not impressed. Gets the thumbs down from me.
I'll have a chat with my son tomorrow and probably give him my Origin account.

Switched from controller to hotas - with the exception of the throttle I think I found the controller easier tbh :| corrections are quicker on the controller as there's less throw. Anyone else find this? Also, on joystick do you have twist as roll or not?

LOL ahhh maaannn, i've gotta re-learn it now. is it actually better? I figured you wanted the fine control in the vertical and horizontal. I don't even know why I'm asking the question, it's obviously better isn't it.. :p

That's the default out-of-the-box setting for flight sticks on Squadrons with my HOTAS-X. Yes, it makes no sense at all...
it's like this in the original xwing series, i think that's the reason

So couldn't wait for this game played a few hours plus a good hour or so making the HOTAS actually sort of work. But the deadzone issues oh god its just ruined using one.

VR looked amazing in the cockpit and being able to see the full inside of a Tie Fight but that wasn't enough for me to keep it I decided to just get a refund.

I also seemed to experience an issue with my X52 disconnecting from the game as well and being stuck just spinning in Circles. I know it has to be something to do with the game as DCS in VR is fine even after a 2 hour Multiplayer mission with no disconnects at al

Might keep my eyes on it though as I really want it to be good but was just Meh. Hopefully it improves with patches but for now I'll keep my £35

T1600M Hotas and CV-1, really enjoying this and not seeing the problems reported by many here. Biggest issue is the clunky menus, but gameplay is fine

Is anyone actually playing this game or is everyone just playing around with their sticks?

Had a fun deathmatch earlier on an amazing look station map. Fellow potatoes so I fared quite well. A decent support makes all the difference.

I found it does not like a lot of devices. I had to remove my MFDs to get it to fully recognise warthog joy + throttle+ pedals. Literally just had those three plugged in. Any software that uses the windows joystick numbering is a nightmare.

I though it pretty fun for what it is. There is a similar level of fidelity in the ships compared to older X-wing games and the VR performance is good when compared to other flight sims. For 30 odd quid its good value for money. I mean I have paid 60 quid for some DCS modules and they are still not finished.

Good article here about X wing forces and pilots. I presume the movie world they inhabit have some kind of G force 'shield' for the pilots...

Tried this for the first couple of missions then refunded. Was really looking forward to it as well. I was really hoping this was gonna be a worthy successor to the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series but no. While it looks visually great, the ships feel like they flying in treacle no matter how much I played with the sensitivity settings. The energy management felt limited. The mission objectives felt very linear, with no seeming freedom to how you tackled the missions. The "maps" while looking stunning, felt cramped and lacked scale of movement. Constant hull repair? I mean Tie's are meant to be melted by X-Wings, even if they are player craft, its part of the challenge. Auto aim? Just left me feeling a bit meh...

Didn't try VR as I didn't want to pass the 2 hour refund limit. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, but can't help feeling X-Wing Alliance did it better, and to some extent, still does even after 21 years, especially now its got VR support. Compelling story, decent length campaign, large scale battles with multiple simultaneous objectives which can be be tackled in different ways, I know what I'll be reinstalling tonight.

By default energy management is quite basic but there are options for more player controlled energy systems in the options. I get the feeling the single player is a much extended tutorial for all the ships so you’re not dropped into MP completely cold. The TIE’s are much sturdier than they were in X-Wing. I remember sitting in my Y-Wing destroying over a hundred TIE fighters launched as pairs every time I destroyed them just by sitting and letting them fly towards me and basting them with two fully charged laser shots each.

I have not refunded because I have an Oculus Quest and the VR side of things is very fun, but I totally agree with you. In the run up to this I installed Alliance again with all the MODS and also joined the Discord for XWVM an overhaul of Xwing that uses the unity engine. I am now more excited to go back to modded Alliance and XWVM when it is released than this.

As I said in another forum, this game is a Marvel movie and the 90s X-Wing games were Spielberg's. All I can think of is that it is such a missed opportunity, but while you are making games for consoles as well as PCs I think you will always get some dumbing down. It is unlikely we will ever see a game on the level of the 90s ones, all you can do is support the Modders updating them for current systems.
