CNN (TV) is reporting that 11 mobile chemical-biological labs were found near Karbala recently. CNN reporter Ryan Chilcote interviewed a General from the 101st Airborne Division who said that these labs were buried underground and marked for easy detection. In addition, these labs were located near a place where artillery shells and/or rockets were either made or stored.

The follow up didn't make the headlines.

• Buried laboratories: The buried labs U.S. troops found last week were not the mobile chemical and biological weapons labs one U.S. Army general suspected, CNN Correspondent Ryan Chilcote reported Tuesday. The 11 cargo containers were filled with new laboratory equipment apparently intended to make conventional weapons, said Chief Warrant Officer Monte Gonzalez, the head of the team brought in to examine them.

With respect to the statue thing the media over-hype an isolated incident, as it sells papers.

If it was just media hype then I wouldnt worry about it, its Rumsfeld & others hyping up certain events and telling them to shutup about others that makes me shout. Its funny watching his press conferences in full, because he frequently tells the media how they should think, so it becomes easy to see what stories the US administration would like the media to focus on. I was insulted by the way he tried to downplay the looting by making the joke about the vase. Likewise the BBC seem fond of telling the world every time Downing Street puts pressure on them to stop hyping a certain story and focus on something more positive.

So Im afraid as long as governments hype some stuff and downplay others, in the name of influencing popular opinion, I'll be here to make noises about it.

So I presume you were making noise about the Iraqi Information Minister too? ie complaining about how he was exaggerating things and spreading lies?

Were you insulted by the continual proclamations by the minister that thousands of civilians were being killed deliberately?

How about Al-Jazeera and its biased anti-US coverage, I dont recall you making any noise about that either with regards to their reporting of 'thousands' of slaughtered civilians by 'deliberately targeted' bombs, when the real numbers appear to be much lower.

By all means make noise about misinformation and biased reporting but in my opinion, Al-Jazeera is equally bad if not worse than CNN/ABC etc in terms of biased reporting.

Terrorist Link: The Smoking Gun!

For Yossarian a different smoking gun ;)

CNN - Mastermind of Achille Lauro hijacking arrested in Iraq

Abbas was arrested about 50 miles west of Baghdad after being turned away from Iraq's border with Syria, a Palestinian source told CNN.

ABC (Australian)
The Palestinian Authority has demanded the release of veteran Palestinian guerrilla leader Abu Abbas, saying his detention in Iraq by US forces violates an interim Middle East peace deal.

"We demand the United States release Abu Abbas. It has no right to imprison him," Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat said. Abbas was sentenced in absentia in Italy to life in prison for planning the hijacking. Although he was the target of a manhunt after the incident, Washington dropped a warrant for his arrest several years ago. "The Palestinian-Israeli interim agreement signed on September 28, 1995 stated that members of the Palestine Liberation Organisation must not be detained or tried for matters they committed before the Oslo peace accord of September 13, 1993."
"This interim agreement was signed on the US side by President Clinton and his secretary of state, Warren Christopher," Mr Erekat said.

There was no immediate Israeli comment on Abbas' arrest by US special forces. In 1998, the Israeli Supreme Court declared Abbas immune from prosecution in Israel over the ship's hijacking. He was allowed to return to the Gaza Strip by an Israeli Security Committee which concluded he had renounced violence.
So not a smoking gun

LOL. OK not a smoking gun for the Iraqi war/current international terrorist line.
Could be a very interesting case to watch the politics of this one.

The difference is that nobody I know beleived the Iraqi Information Minister, so there isnt a lot of point in me pointing out propaganda when its already blatant. As for Al Jazeera, well I dont get that channel myself, so if I were to comment on it it would only be based on reports in our press about Al Jazeera, and how do I know if they are presenting what it shows fairly? Im sure Al Jazeera is biased, I just dont feel qualified to discuss it in any meaningful detail.
