I dont understand the "warning shots" bit. If i was driving past some armed people and they shot at me I doubt i'd think "Crikey i'd better stop the car and let them shoot me properly".

yea that is what the hand motion to stop means. The soldier was most likely standing in the middle of the road with his hand straight out and palm facing forward. WTF can that possibly mean than stop or slow down. I mean Iraqis may not have the greatest schools but its not rocket science here now is it.

You're not driving past them you're driving at them. It turns you into a possible threat

The ordinary Iraqi families must be terrified of the invasion force and who can blame them (!) and people who are afraid do not think rationally, clearly. Doesn't explain the ridiculous claim of "warning shots", either don't shoot it or open fire to kill all occupants, there is simply no middle ground.

It explains it well and clear. the soldiers didnt shoot first they signal for the truck to stop. How the **** is that scary. Yea I raise my hand, what the driver thinks I got a laser beam attached to the end of my arm. The guy didnt do as he was signaled to do. You drive up to a point in the road with armed people are standing, one most likely in the middle of the road with his arm out in front. Come on! of course the guy knew he was supposed to stop!

I mean who here drives up to a toll booth and drives right through it?
'sorry officer, I didnt know that poll across the road was telling me to stop.'

I Didn't say the signal to stop was intimidating. What must be very intimidating is the invasion force itself. A foreign power invades your land with tonnes upon tonnes of armour with nightly bombing raids and sets about grabbing power, whatever the motives (lets not go there tonight ;)) it just has to be terrifying for the poorly informed Iraqi people. I dont understand how you can dispute that.

Again I didn't dispute that. But if the invaders were seen as an evil, aggressive force why should the driver put himself (and presumably) his family at their mercy?

While it is a tragedy, the Soldiers did EVERYTHING they could have done to get the vehicle to stop.

Incidentaly, women can be suicide bombers too.

In light of recent happenings, i would have done exactly the same thing. Their restraint is commendable.

Ok we agree that the force is intimidating but like I have said the war has been going on for 10 days now. I am not implying that they should be used to it completly but there are a few things that should be noticed and common sense should kick in. One of those things is the presense of foreign troops who are armed.

In all honesty, if I was driving my car and the US while Canada was invading and I was driving towards a point in the road where a lot of Canadian troops were standing I would feel intimidated but I would stop. Common sense telle me that the one standing in the middle of the road is there to play chicken with the car.

I think the deaths are tragic and arent going to help the cause but I think the shoot was complelty and unterly justified and unless some evidence to say otherwise comes forth then thats how I feel. I respect your opinion though

Because driving at a bunch of people with guns who've just told you to stop is even more stupid than putting "himself (and presumably) his family at their mercy?"

I just read on CNN.com that four US Marines were killed when the dirver of the tank was shot and the tank drove off a bridge and into a river.:( the tanka dn personel have been recovered but a tragic loss none the less:( I think drowning is one of the worst ways to go:(

Agreed drowning is awful.

has this been confirmed or is it just a report

Its based on a Central Command press release:

March 31, 2003
Release Number: 03-03-106
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

REMAINS OF FOUR U.S. MARINES RECOVERED

SOUTHERN IRAQ – As a result of recent combat operations northwest of An Nasiriyah, four Marines from the First Marine Expeditionary Force are now listed as killed in action. Previously, the Marines were unaccounted for and officially in a “Duty Status and Whereabouts Unknown” category. A preliminary investigation shows that while crossing a bridge over an Iraqi waterway March 27, the driver of an M1A1 tank was shot and killed. The tank, with the driver and three other crewmen, fell into the river landing upside-down. The three remaining crewmen are believed to have drowned.

Marines and Navy Seabee personnel recovered the tank and its crewmen Sunday. The Marines’ names are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Total Numbers and Estimates From Iraq

By The Associated Press

The war on Iraq by the numbers:

Casualties: Among U.S. troops, 42 dead, seven captured, 17 missing, according to the Pentagon and family members. Among British troops, 25 dead, none missing or captured.

Deployed: A little more than 300,000 troops are in the region, with about 250,000 from the United States and the rest being from other coalition countries.

Timeline: Monday was the 12th day of the war, which began in Iraq on March 20.

Iraqi troops estimate: 350,000.

Iraqi deaths: No estimate of military casualties. Iraq says at least 425 civilians have been killed since the war began.

Bombs dropped in Iraq: 3,000 bombs dropped over the weekend raised to 8,000 the total number used since the war began.

Iraqi prisoners of war: 8,000, according to the British defense minister.

Volunteers: An Iraqi official said 4,000 Arab volunteers have arrived to carry out suicide attacks against coalition forces.

Oil: More than 600 oil wells and three oil refineries are under coalition control. Only two oil well fires remain burning in the Rumeila South oil field.

Sources include U.S. Central Command, the Pentagon and British Ministry of Defense.

Absolutely terrible but the US troops took the correct action in the circumstances IMO.

Do we know all the story though? It was a van right, what kind of van? I would hazard a guess that it wasnt an open van..I seriously doubt that any US soldier would shoot children in cold blood right in front of them..It takes a special kind of person to do that, even if they are in danger.

If it was a van with no windows, that kind of changes the situation doesnt it...a van with adults driving, coming straight toward you and ignoring your warnings to stop.

Details are being given on News 24 now.

An enquiry has been set up, but at present it is seen that they acted it accordance with the rules in light of the recent terrorist attacks.
