I hate the stigma attached to STD clinics - its so important to go if your sexually active with different partners..
In my opinion the government and to a certain degree GP's needs to do more to educate peeps at a young age to go as a routine and not to be embarrased about it!! But our education system is **** for sex education.
I go every 6 months or so and to different ones ; the process seems to vary from place to place. It also depends on what you say to the doc - i.e. if they think your becoming ill over worrying about possibly having HIV they can do a 30min test and some places in London do it as standard.
Reading clinic one cultures your swab test and has the results for things like gonohorrea (sp?) , chlymedia and to a degree herpes (but its hard to detect unless you are having an outbreak) in about 15mins. Blood test then for syphilis/HIV/Herpes.
Southampton one is funny because its a student hospital and so you sometimes have students with clipboards watching the process as well which is always funny
They do ask you if you mind or not though.
So if your sexually active get your self down there!! Its an experience in the least
Things to note*
Gonohorrea is tested for in your mouth, bum and penis.
HIV tests are best taken 3 months after possible exposure because your body may not have produced the anti bodies that are tested for until 3 months after exposure - but as far as I can gather in most people it can show within 2 weeks?
Herpes like Warts etc can reoccur like coldsores.
Some strains of the virus that causes warts can be quite serious for females as this is one of the main causes of cervical cancer - if you have it though they will advise more regular tests for you so they can keep an eye on it. If you are very concerned there is a vaccine for it - controversially not offered to men.
