Steam Auction

Is this the worse sale yet? Unless I misunderstood something that vast majority of people are going to come out with nothing. Almost all items already have more bids then the maximum amount of possible wins and the bids are so high the effective amount you pay is high in comparison to normal sales.

So we end up with no good bargains and the majority of people unable to get anything.
Please tell me there is a normal x-mess sale after this! This current sale is just a giant waste of time.

At the end of the day, Steam won't run ananything that will not benefit themselves.

Let people buy your useless stuff and keep the credit for what you want at a later date as gas been suggested.

There is no current sale. There is an auction/meta game. The actual sale starts on the 18th.

My bets are Steam are doing this to clear millions of items from there database. What's more amazing about this are the amount of people who fail at basic math and put in impossible bids they cannot win.

Thank God they allowed you to make booster packs, I'll never be able to afford any of those auction prices. That profile thing is up for 233,600 gems at the minute! My word...

I'm not sure I get this. Looking at the list of auctions most of them are 20k gems plus. I have 5k worth of gems so I'm not likely to win anything worth bidding on. And the people with loads of gems would have got them by playing loads of games right? So they won't be in the market for the random games on offer :/ or have I missed something?

Valve are very smart this will generate a lot of money for THEM as they take a cut of every transaction even community items bought/sold is 2 or 3p per transaction.

But if you want to buy even a cheap game your going to need tens of thousands of gems its not financially viable unless you were not selling your trading cards when you earned those (they can easily get you several pounds per game that's what I did sell as you earn them at game launch they are worth way more then it easily adds to £2-3 per full price game in steam wallet funds).

I'm trying to get as many packs ready for the Christmas Sale.
Christmas cards and get some sets complete.

Shame cards are worth nothing in Gems.

@mark, how did you get holiday cards already?

I think they probably got their hundreds of thousands of gems by buying stuff on the market and converting them to gems. There are a few people on Steam with more money than sense. They'll win auctions for games that they already own, or could afford at any time. These are the same people who spend hundreds of dollars on trading cards just to get their Steam level up.

What really should have been done to make it fair, was to allow us buy raffle tickets with the gems reather than place "bids". Completely random then, and therefore much fairer.

You get a holiday card for every badge you craft. Thats why I always save all my booster packs up and then craft them all during a holiday sale. Crafted 28 badges, so have 28 holiday cards, including the 2 foils that i sold.

Yeah dont go changing cards into gems. Sell the holiday ones for 15p or whatever then buy a few 3p backgrounds that are worth 80 gems each. I had a ton of backgrounds that I converted to gems to get 8000 gems. I would have had a lot more but I sold a load recently as people are buying them up to change to gems. I was just glad to get rid of them all, but wish I had known sooner as I probably would have had more like 10k gems.

Ah, didn't know badges gave holiday cards yet!
Can only craft a booster pack of the same kind once a day as well :(

Have you made any holiday sale badges yet, Mark? Or is it better to wait til during the sale itself in case they've some other function?

it seems steam will be keeping the gem feature after the Auction event.

I'd be quite happy if they keep that - get rid of the useless stuff like emoticons, and craft booster packs which you can then sell on the market.

What happens to Steam Gems after the Holiday Auction ends?
Gems will not disappear from your Inventory after the Holiday Auction event ends. You can continue making and using it to create Booster Packs.

Frankly the only positive from this whole gem thing is many of the items in my inventory that were completely worthless, are actually now worth selling as the value has increased overnight.

On badge screen I have an unfinished Steam Summer Getaway badge progress.

If I sell the badges will that remove Steam Summer Getaway from badge progress screen completely, or just leave reminder there saying I have no badges?

Edit: Once the cards go to market the badge progression vanishes.

Is this worth doing to get rid of the crappy emoticons and wallpapers?

Should I just sell the above on the marketplace for cash or turn them into gems and then sell the gems?

I missed it all. :(

Had a ton of cheap wallpapers and stuff that I'd just left up there for 1p, hoping they'd go some day and WHOOOSH, they're all picked up before I even knew what was happening.

Dagnammit!
