Steam Client being released for Linux o_O

This.

It is one thing for them to release the Steam client, it is another to convince publishers of other than Indie games that developing their AAA titles on different O.S's is worth it.

The day they release Battlefield 3 on Mac is the day I post a photo of my ass on these forums.

The day they release it on Linux is the day I go full frontal.

No, but first they need a way to actually distribute it to them. I can't see the Mac/Linux section appearing at your local GAME store anytime soon even if there was a small catalogue available. Digital Downloads is the simplist way and you need the Client compatable before you bother with the games.
It'll just be the first step really.

There was actually rumours of a Mac version just so you know.... :p

Not that I want to see your rear end or anything.

You're fooling nobody :p

Read the first post Carefully.

Yeh so... An article from one minor website who have been bleating on about Steam on Linux for 2 years, and have (maybe) coincidentally got it right, I can't see any links in their article to major news outlets, neither have I seen it on any major gaming websites and the steam store makes no mention of it what so ever. Oh and if you google "Steam on Linux" the linked article is the second down and the rest are all just rumours.

So next time you post a sarcastic little comment, engage your brain first.

If you read through it you'll find that references and even an unreleased Linux client were find among the files released with the Mac client. Valve recently pulled such a stunt with the Beta release by including very suspicious Mac references in the files downloaded with the Windows Client.

Also, if you follow the link you'll a paragraph talking about confirmation at a different source which is here.

Pay particular attention to the last sentence in that article :)

Look at the post above yours :)

Okay, okay, they're old rumours but they're still rumours :D

The problem is, how much more will it dumb down games development.

Most devs are already too ****ing lazy to give the PC a proper version despite the fact they make a boat load of profit from it either way. Whats the chance the Linux or Mac version will be any better? If anything the Linux/Mac ports will be a crappy port of the pc version which is already normally a crappy port of the console version, so things will only be going downhill.

So true, still its a step forward, if there were decent games on linux I would happily spend all my time on it. Beginning of the end for windows.

WOW!

I think a few people out there will be very happy to hear there are some people out there who will blindly believe anything they read on a website. I'm well aware of the history, however that website has posted on numerous occasions things like 'STEAM ON LINUX IS DEFINITELY COMING' when it has not got the proof.

The Torygraph is NOT a reliable source, i'd be surprised if the person who wrote that article even know what Linux is, i'd go as far to say its a coincidence they were released at similar times.

If Valve HAD confirmed anything it would be all over major news websites, it is not on ANY of them, even as a rumour. As I say a Google search returns the linked article as the second result and nothing else.

it'll probably only be for valves own games.

Almost sounds like you;re making a negative point!

In any case, Valve remain one of the most popular developers and distributors in the world. You can bet that if they corner and grip an entirely new market and it proves to be lucrative (which is possible, but not guaranteed), others will want to muscle in on it. And what easier way than through their already existing distribution deals with Steam!

Who knows, it might just kick off. OpenGL is not completely abandoned just yet.

Back in the day win 95/98. when Directx was young you used to be able to select open gl rendering in most games.

And open gl always looked better and played better. hopefully the tides will turn it's only cos Microshaft have the monopoly of the market and are so influential that direct x is what it is today...

Linux and Mac OS are already better OS's than windows although Win 7 is pretty darn good , as said before here it's a 1st step and a good one at that.

Do many games run 'simply' in Linux nowwadays? I've not looked at gaming on Linux for years, used to be a pig's ear to run anything iirc.

Hopefully this will encourage developers to release for Linux? Can but hope..

I hope so, I have an second computer, core 2 quad, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and with a GeForce GTX 260 running Ubuntu sitting there hardly been used. I think the last game I play on Linux was UT2003 and Quake 4.

No, nearly every game that is "talked about" uses DirectX, which is a proprietary Microsoft product.
