Steam Frame (Valve Index 2)

Speaking for myself. The point would be ultimate portability for flatscreen and VR. I would take it abroad when visiting family for extended periods where I will not be transporting my PC back and forth.

Which is a very good point.. i'm just not the guy that takes my VR on holiday/visiting with me.. and i'm really not saying that's bad.. i'm just not a portable gamer other than the occasional word or number game on my phone..

The 2d gaming thing is great, but that's exactly the scenario you want colour pass through. On the move, mobile gaming etc.

Still laughing at this being £800.

£600 max I recon. Looking forward to release of the price.

time will tell. other than the steamdeck which I admit at launch offered a lot of bang for buck, valve hardware is not usually cheap. just look at the cost of the index/original steam machines.

I'd argue the Index filled a very different place in the market than this will though...

I'd buy at £500ish, can't see a pressing reason to go much higher when compared to other options.

it has a lot of compute and storage as well as a battery in it that "dumb" headsets don't need . it's more powerful than a quest 3 and it is generally accepted meta subsidise their quest 3 somewhat and am not sure valve will do that

anyway we can come back to this in a few months . the truth will out !

When looking at the Meta quest 3 / 3S pricing it is worth also considering things like this:

I can't see Valve taking this kind of kit on their ecosystem so I'd expect pricing to be materially higher than the Quest 3.

Edit: $4.4 billion loss on $470m of sales.

The company’s Reality Labs division has now recorded over $70 billion in cumulative losses since late 2020, underscoring the high costs of building VR, AR and other consumer hardware.

yep lenses are on way but not ready yet. but its an additional cost (to consumers) and complexity (valve / makers) i imagine with the eye tracking

was more thinking of magnet placement or clipping surface.
along with making sure holes all line up correctly ect.

Valve alreadysaid they were doing it, but its how its engineered in to the product which can be more complex as its quiet a busy area with out much clearance ect

We do know two things.

First We know that Valve are struggling to get the Steam Frame below the $1000 price of the Valve Index. And with the price of memory, and indeed other components, only going up for the foreseeable future. I am not sure they will make that price point.

The second thing we know is that Valve has already stated that they aren't going to be selling any of their hardware at a loss. So they will not subsidise any of the costs.
