Steam Link and Steam Controller now available to Pre Order

guys would this be any good with my virgin media superhub, my pc is upstairs and wireless enabled and always seems to get a strong signal. Would make it a lot better to chill on the sofa and play my games rather than sitting at my PC.

I have exactly the same setup. and when i used my laptop to stream COD over Steam it was flawless,

i got my link yesterday, and am planning to hardwire or use homeplugs

but will give the wireless a quick shot later today and let you know how it goes?

I caved in and ordered a Steam Link and pad. Devs say 5.1 is in the pipeline.

I use powerline adapters which have excellent throughput and signal in the house so fingers crossed.

Winter's coming, it's going to be grim and cold. I'd rather not spend all my time and money in the pub so marathon gaming sessions on the TV it is.

BTW - has anyone tried adding MAME as a Steam game and launching it via streaming yet to see if it works?

For some reason, my Link was able to connect ok this morning. Bizarre.

But I've got no audio at all and cant figure it out(tried all kinds of things). Thinking it's something to do with my Xonar DGX sound card as I'm seeing other people had similar problems but were able to get it sorted(but their solutions aren't working for me).

It also seems to kill my cable TV service, requiring a full on reboot of *everything* to get it back. That is going to be a major problem if I cant figure out what's causing it. Ordering another Powerline with a dual ethernet plug for downstairs to see if plugging straight from powerline adapter to Steam link fixes that. Right now the Link is plugged straight into my Virgin Superhub.

A proper hassle so far.

Does anyone know how I can force my PC to use Intel QuickSync over the Nvidia hardware encoding?

I had a brief go with the Link last night and it looks awful on my 58" 4K TV, I was expecting some image degradation, but this was something else, it looked like a Youtube video at 240p. Horrible stuttery mess (hard wired connection).

I've followed a few guides online and I managed to see it using QuickSync briefly but it just seems to be stuck using the Nvidia encoder now.

I found the link to be absolutely brilliant last night. I have an issue with sound card drivers crashing when i exit games in big picture mode on the pc, which takes the sound out on my pc and the link, but that's a serpate issue. Actual streaming, especially given i havent tried wired yet, is very good indeed. Played some bioshock infinite last night and there was no indication it wasn't being played directly on the pc. brilliant stuff. the link did also lock up on me once, so i guess there's still work to be done lol.

Yea, it can. First thing I'd do is replace your 2nd powerline with another TP-Link. Then pair them up with the TP Link utility app.

But it's very difficult to give any easy advice here. Networks are so fiddly and unique.

That said, it's pretty much exactly my setup, except I've got a Virgin Superhub instead of a normal router(and my powerlines are only 200Mbs), but I'm hoping that isn't a huge issue since the Link will basically be plugged straight from the powerline.

I'll let you know how my experience goes once I get mine(hopefully tonight, but looking less likely now).

How did it go for you?

I completely forgot an important part of my setup. The powerline adapter is connected to a power extension lead. I think I may need to get a powerline adapter with a pass through :(

Not good so far. Audio doesn't work at all for me(likely a sound card issue) and after using the Link, it seems to knock out my cable TV service for some reason.

As for your setup, instead of getting one with a passthrough, you could always just get a new powerstrip with more outlets for everything else, while the powerline gets plugged into the wall on its own. Would be cheaper, at least.

EDIT: Oh wait, sounds like you only have one outlet?

Yep, 1 outlet in this room, it sucks. I have an extension with ~8 sockets, and the powerline adapter is currently plugged into that.

I'm probably going to have to upgrade it to a double socket myself instead of getting a powerline adapter with passthrough and save £40

I only noticed an issue with sound when I used wireless. I haven't had any other issues with the Steam link.

just to note I have the superhub 2

connected using the link's wireless onto the hubs 5ghz and the connection seems to be very good, tried playing Farcry, which have to say in game played pretty good, very respsonsive, until the game crashed on exit( a problem with the game nothing else)

so gave BLOPS 3 a go, which was a nightmare to go thru the setup using my steam controller, and not having used a controller for years is, so i was all over the place and no matter what i tried i could not get it to stop playing in split screen mode Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, i would get it to show "split screen" de-activated" but then as i went to play it activated again doh!!

so gave up and went onto BLOPS 2, a lot better, the game play and video was great, couple of blippy bits but very playable (once i get used to aiming with the controller)

so then i decided to connect the Link direct to my super hub's Ethernet port,

(obviously main PC upstairs is still using wifi)

i think this provided a slightly more seamless connection, and game play was really smooth,

im no techy, so just telling it how i see it,

really glad i bought the link, and getting used to the controller which is the Key to everything, as that turns on the Link and you go from there, even used it to restart my pc, if i cannot get used to the aiming thou i might have to try the Xbox 360 controller , just think its not very responsive, dont know if you can adjust it

Got my controller yesterday. Played a bit of rocket league. Seems to work fine just need to get used to the size compared to xbox one controller.

Only annoying thing was that from time to time it came up with a message on the screen that there's connection problem but it was working fine. I have the dongle plugged at the back of my case and it was "complaining" that it needs direct line of sight.

Ok, so pretty much all my major issues with the Link have suddenly cleared up. Seems like each and every time I try and tinker with it, problems go away for god knows why.

Connecting fine now.

Audio works.

No problem switching back to cable TV input.

Soooo, now that I've finally had a chance to use it proper, it's pretty nice. Image quality isn't all that good, but it's not dreadful. I can definitely live with it for many games where I dont care about the graphics so much.

Performance is ok. Bit of occasional lag, but nothing that I think is going to hamper my experience with the games I'll be playing on it. Probably wont be playing much fast-paced competitive stuff with it.

Few issues with certain games:

- Cant run GTA V because a pop up from Windows asks me if I will allow it to change crap. I *really* hate this pop-up and wish there was a way I could turn it off for certain applications. I could run upstairs and hit Yes and then continue, but that's too annoying to deal with on a regular basis.

- Black Ops 3 is stuck in splitscreen mode trying to do Campaign mode. I'm guessing it's picking up both kb/m plus my 360 controller and assuming there's two people trying to play? Either way, it doesn't work properly.

- Trials Fusion, a Uplay game, will load up, but it wont display.

this is exactly what i was getting, glad its not only me, must be a setting somewhere to stop it?

Steam link works fine for me through home plug BUT i did think that i would be able to play games downstairs whilst the wife is doing her work on the same pc...it just streams the actual screen.

:(

Easily fixed with one word. Divorce. :p
