Steam Machine

Well I’ve just read online and it maybe BS but valve have said it will be priced like a pc not a console…
So that puts it way north of £500

I was hoping this would be reasonably priced but I don't see that happening with RAM prices at the moment.

£879, wow.

£270 to go from 512GB to 2TB :o

Will get around to watching the videos, has anyone managed to try it in dual channel instead of the stock single channel config?

As much as it’s expensive it would be hard to build a similar performing itx machine at the moment wouldn’t it ? Nevermind a prebuilt with warranty/suppport

Bad time to release something like this

GN specced up a 'spec' comparison and the Steam machine was only a touch more expensive, but vs a machine that actually 'performs' the same I think they found it overpriced.
They have a good TL: DW right at the start of their video

6” form factor. That’s really quite dinky! The small form factor could appeal to quite a few out there. But not us hardened foot soldiers of the PC Master Race…

If I didn’t have a PC running Bazzite connected to my TV then I think I’d be tempted. I love my Steam Deck so would view the SM as an upgraded extension of it. I still think the SM is just Valve giving PC manufacturers a poke and saying “Look what we can do! No Windows fees either! SteamOS rocks, doesn’t it? Did we say it was FREE?”

Gutted, knew it was going to happen with how things are right now but still sad to see that price, condemned to be a luxury item now that probably wont make much of push to get steamOS out there to mroe users

Same will happen on the steam frame.. But @TNA is hoping the frame comes out same price as a quest 3

The price is ridiculous and the performance is terrible for the price. Just buy PS5 if you want console and go build a pc that is same/faster and upgradable AND there lots of small cases available that about similar size. 8GB VRAM and 4k & hdmi 2 all rolled into one box LOL

Well the prices are silly for the performance but was expected with the mess we are living in regarding component prices. The device should have been released last year to make any sense and at would have been last years component prices. It's basically dead on arrival at the current specification and prices.

Guessing they had a lot already built and just sat on the stock and waiting for ram and ssds to complete them.

dead on arrival

I expect there to be a queue to get one for a long time.

It's a dinky little thing from Valve, that's a selling point irrelevant of the hardware specs.

But it's all bait to get SteamOS moving. Can't afford new hardware prices? Feeling tempted to get SteamOS for free and put it on your hardware you bought at cheaper prices years ago...?

We shall see mate

It feels like they've scaled back marketing and production and will sell this as a premium luxury product. If they had been able to hit a close-to-PS5 price I'm sure they would be shooting for something more mass market.

It's still a lovely bit of hardware and spec/comparisons aren't that useful when you take into account the form factor and near silent running - that's hard to beat for a front-room PC.

Got it in one.

Can’t afford a Steam Machine? Bummer. What? I can get SteamOS for free and install it on my current PC or even that slightly older one that Windows 11 hates? I can get the same user experience as Steam Machine owners. Wow! Count me in!

The SM is showcase hardware. Clones will soon emerge. Imagine one of those wee Chinese boxes with SteamOS for €500. That’s the future
