Dude, that's just *wrong*It doesn't come with a controller at base price.

As much as it’s expensive it would be hard to build a similar performing itx machine at the moment wouldn’t it ? Nevermind a prebuilt with warranty/suppport
Bad time to release something like this

I’ve been trying to spec a decent itx build on and off for the last month wanting something to go under the tv and be used like a console.if you wanted to do it itx you could do it with a cheap itx case and any old chip and board most on sale are better than what is in Steam machine![]()

It isn’t as easy as you think. Even if you go older and ddr4 ram you then lose pcie4 nvme without expensive mobos. If you want it to be same specs the ram makes it difficult. I can live with it being a bit bigger that the tiny steam machine but it any cheap itx cases are horrible
Everyone keeps saying “you can easy beat that spec for less money” but never back it up. Gamers nexus compared it to the hp omen which is more expensive and about 8 times the size. That minisforum sff you mentioned is more expensive too

It's hard to build something that low spec
Prebuilt you can get a minisforum atom man g1 pro with 32gb, 5060, 1Tb for admittedly a £100 more that top spec steam machine but it is a lot more power, has good DLSS etc
A 5050/5060 laptop is sub 1k, it would do more for you.

You could go left field and buy a Onexplayer 3 8.8 inch handheld gaming machine basically a Legion Go 2 but better running the Intel G3 chip with B390 for same dough, same performance but in your hand.
So more machine options than this little Steam box, I do find the box cool but I have so many Strix Halo machines that would run Steam OS far better it'd be a waste.
Its missing the point though isn't it, the Box isn't for PC building enthusiasts its for casuals who are curious about PC gaming but default to consoles for ease of use etc. Its a console equivalent for PC gaming that doesn't require an Xbox online subscription and Steam games that will play on the Box but also they can use if they go the whole hog and get a "proper" gaming PC in the future. "I bought a game for Xbox, what do you mean I can't use it on a PC I have to pay for it again?! And I can't even use the savegames in a PC? That sux!!"
Its an entry level entry into PC gaming and obviously ties users into the Steam environment. Its just a shame Ram prices have sunk it no wonder they took so long til releasing it they probably decided they couldn't hold on any longer that component prices weren't dropping anytime soon.
Here's a stellar idea; provide an option to purchase without NVME and also without RAM. Price issue resolved.
I expect there to be a queue to get one for a long time.
It's a dinky little thing from Valve, that's a selling point irrelevant of the hardware specs.
But it's all bait to get SteamOS moving. Can't afford new hardware prices? Feeling tempted to get SteamOS for free and put it on your hardware you bought at cheaper prices years ago...?
I've not been convinced the entire time that there is a goal to directly make money by selling it.
As in [this is the steam machine running steamos] for X price and [this is steamos] which is free and you can make your own computer into a steam machine.
How many sales are really needed to give a taste of the operating system, get people downloading it for free and encouraging actual pc makers to bundle it with their pc sales.
It would still be over priced they have said it themselves they want to make profit and came out with bunch of excuses.
I said it before they are greedy which is something people should have known anyway based of have there other products and steam it self takes big %
PS5 Pro would cost more to produce over this steam machine and Sony are not subsidizing the hardware on that but these Value guys are trying to claim they do (Consoles have not done that since XB360 era apart from XB1 launch console did cover cost of Kinect but the console itself they made money on which is another reason it was dropped quickly)
