Stephen Fry and Apple Macs

No it really doesn't. It's like getting a new car, and one supports all sorts of 3rd party add-ons but the better one is just a better car. No matter how good the addons are the other car is just better?

Not if you need the options that the 3rd party addons provide.

its all well and good having as rock solid OS, but ultimately pointless if it cant do what you need.

ANYWAY

This stephen fry bloke . . . . . :D

Is he gay? someone the other day told me he was, but I told them that was just him acting in V for Vendetta.

I never said it was useless.

I said it was "useless, for me".

Vista may well be inferior technically, but given that nothing else will do what I want, it is the only OS for me, and it does what I want well.

Thats 100% fine fella, but the OP is about whatever he's called ranting about how useless Vista is, and like I say he has a point it is carp when considered against the rivals. How course certain people will ALWAYS need to run with something carp. But that never changes the fact that it's carp if you see my point

It's more like being sold a nice brand new Mercedes but being told you're only allowed to drive it around London, is tha really a better option than buying a 3 year old Mondeo which you can drive anywhere?

The biggest problem with Apple is their owners. 95% seem to have social problems. It really puts me off ownership and a lot of Apple forums, it's like Apple can do no wrong. Even here we have to have the iPhone in the Macintosh (now renamed Apple) hardware forums because the nasty other people might compare it to different phones. Pathetic.

(I own three Macs and an iPhone by the way and personally prefer them to PCs at the moment)

Now with added "Five Fin Technology". :p

When Belfast got it's Apple store, there was a slot on local news about it and they were talking to people who were queued up waiting to get in... I sat infront of the TV, facepalmed and felt bad for all the Apple users who aren't grade A tools. One proclaimed he loved Macs because he was a designer and then showed off his Apple logo tattoo.

But it always happens. They get the rampant fanboys (and girls) at their worst.

Is that the one in the Victoria Centre? it's always empty when I doddle past, apart from a couple of teenagers giggling at an iPod.

Vista is much better after, "Net user administrator /active:yes".

Why would you want to?

Why would you want to?

When your doing software development you constantly get uac prompts and have to elevate command prompts to compile and run code. Hell I have had to reinstall games because they needed to be installed in an elevated mode before they would work, which vista failed to tell me. Now I use the main admin account and there is no more hinderence to my work/play. Also, programs that disable signed driver requirements are great as well for making applications like ati tool work. :)

I don't see what the fuss is about.

IIRC Fry has been into technology for a long time, and from what I understand is very much into the Mac's because of the generally good design, and ease of use for what he wants them to do - something that has rarely been true of windows until xp/vista (for general non techy users).
I'm guessing he just got completely hacked off with trying to get vista to work with one of his other devices and vented - I do it sometimes, my brother does it a lot and we're both very much PC users*, the difference being he's well known, and he uses twitter, whilst most irritated PC users aren't particularly well known, and probably don't use twitter so their rants are only heard by those in the same building/street.

I don't think he makes that big a song and dance out of his preference for macs, but does joke about them/PC's at times when the subject comes up.

*Vista is in someways a big improvement on XP, but in other ways it's a huge PITA to try and get working as some things are hidden in the "wrong place" (not where you'd logically expect them to be, compared to XP etc), and other things just won't work with it in the way you'd expect or at all.

I use windows professional, mainly because I dont have a choice. But it is pathetic, no two ways about it.

You seem to think your opinion is fact, and you're expressing it as if it's common knowledge. You've yet to actually explain why you don't like Windows, what disadvantages it has in your experience, or say why you prefer other systems. Instead, you're coming across as a bit narrow-minded, and you keep saying 'carp'.

There's something to be said for well tested hardware combinations. If I started a linux distro it would work out of the box (Flash, Java, codecs, etc.) and would have a tested hardware list.
