Stephen Hawkings Universe

Can't see it mattering too much until we find a way of travelling through space more efficiently, realistically we'd need to be able to at least travel outside of our solar system as we know our planets here don't contain life other than our own.

Stephen Hawking is definatley an inspirational person in view of his disability and how he continues to do outsanding work.

He is like some character out of Isaac Asmiov. I'd love to be able to read his Book but I guess that it would go way over my head ! :p

I love physics though it's amazing stuff.

Better to stick with the Documentary's in my case.:D

Errr maybe not intelligent life at our level but certainly not ruled out life. Under the ice of Europa maybe? Weird bacteria on Titan in it's methane oceans? I know these are moons and not planets but c'mon.

When exactly did I say 10k DID exist?

You can put conservative numbers into the equation and still come up with a lot of life in our galaxy

*Could exist.

Mathematical probabilities are 100% more accurate than "plucking out of thin air" wouldn't you think?
But they aren't mathematical probabilities. There isn't enough data to make any probabilities.

heh heh so a guy who says Hawkins is an "idiot" and that "Probabilities that scientists have come up with are plucked out of thin air." is right? Please explain how you came to that conclusion

I don't know who called Hawking an idiot.

And we don't know how many planets could develop life, we don't know how many planets could develop intelligent life, we don't know how many of these civilizations could release detectable signs of their existence into space, we don't know how long these civilizations could release detectable signs of their existence into space. The Drake equation is based on unknowns.

Well of course it's unknowns, are you missing the point?? The variables entered are based on our best guess work on how solar systems and life on earth formed and chances the planet falls in the habital zone. The variables are certainly not 'plucked out of the air'.

Well "our best guess work" is plucked out of the air. How can you possibly give a number for how long a civilisation will broadcast signals for example? We have no idea.

yeah of course our best guess work is plucked out of the air. Do you read what you're writing? I guess we can give up on science and just pluck out variables from the air for future equations

We only listen on the wavelengths we understand when listening out into the universe with our telescopes.

Maybe other civilisations use many different wavelengths at the same time.

And when we hear signals of any kind were only hearing part of a signall so it just sounds like the background sound of space.

Heh just a random theory i remember seing that japanese or chinese dude who usualy goes on about type 1 or type 2 civilisatoins documentory.

Kardashev scale http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale

I believe the Universe is teaming with life, complex and simple. If it happened here its happened everywhere.

Where currently studying the atmospheres of exoplanets to try to find the footprints of life.

When they were talking about visiting the moon that was a mass of water possibly teeming with deep sea-like life, did anyone else get the impression that a probe from us would involve drilling it and then it cracks Ice Age style and spills into space? :>

15 miles thick he said? thats some space probe to manage that

Well they did indicate that getting there would be a lot harder than Mars so my imagination had already said if A was possible, then why not B ;)

i thought the program was frankly crap.

i got sick of it fading in and out of Microsoft Hawkins and the guy narrating. We get the idea.... its him and his ideas..

Nothing new or remotely interesting to anyone that has even the slightest interest in the subject.
