Stick with Sky or Check out Alternatives?

You can, at least, use BT in an IP only mode - somewhat academic I guess with the since sky have nowtv .....
... is the BT subscription channel choice/content poor though ?

earlier thread about superior BT sd streaming, on their own content (so not freeview content as I had suggested)
I can confirm that BT SD is indeed decent, both via IP and satellite, think I read that thread before :), I forgot to compare with iplayer tbf, I have the box direct cabled via gigabit to router. I've cancelled it this morning, the deal was ok & I had planned to upgrade my TV to 4k in the near future & in the interim watch HD channels via IP/Bt box as my current solution

Yep, abysmal, which is why I cancelled my package a couple of months ago. Not entirely BT's fault as channels like Universal and SyFy have become quite poor the past couple of years since Netflix et all have encroached on the shows they'd usually have rights to, but BT do themselves no favours by not even having stuff like E4 HD or Film4 HD. The AMC channel is rubbish too, again due to other channels/services having rights to most big AMC shows.

I got a free UHD box out of them though so it's not all bad I guess.

With Sky, to get the best deals you literally have to cancel each year - refuse offers by the cancellations department and they look at the offers they send in the My Sky App on the box or on the website.

Ive done the every year - just renewed Sky+ HD With entertainment pack, HD pack and boxsets for £15 per month

Its not BT's fault they cant have E4 HD or Film4 HD its a Sky/Virgin exclusive deal.

There were some good NowTV offers on I got Sky Sports for £16 per month for 3 months there was also a good Sky Cinema deal offered £3 per month for 3 months but didnt bother with that one.

as much as i hate ads. you can normally skip them after 5 seconds or less so it isn't a big deal IMO.

i certainly wouldn't stop watching i want to watch because of adverts. "Cutting off the nose to spite the face".

I think you are overreacting here.

You obviously didn't read what I put - the link between the adverts and the program constantly broke- so I would constantly have to restart the adverts multiple times before I could get to the 2nd part of any program - so no it wasn't just a case of "skipping after 5 seconds" even if it was an option....which it wasn't when I last used those services.

Its also a case of there are more interesting things (or even just as interesting) on other sides so I don't have to bother.....viewing habits do change believe it or not

So nothing at all to do with "cutting off the nose" as you put it

To watch any non-subscription channels you do. The rest are delivered via the aerial.

Ive never needed to try it consistently - but I presume you can still get the major BBC channels via IP / iplayer as a "live" broadcast? Admittedly you may not have so much choice but you don't NEED the aerial connected.

Admittedly when I just unpacked my new OLED, I left it un-tuned for a few days and it was a pain trying to get through the "your tv is still un-tuned" bit every time I switched it on to watch a disc, I eventually relented and went through the tuning process although Im not sure I will watch live broadcast very much.

skipping is not possible on the roku all4 app, as you say ... it just enumerates how many adds you have to sit through often 1of8,
not sure if their adds all have the same duration .. to be able to switch over in the interim, like the add break on live tv

- when I had used the PC app, the virus/adware blocker (edit: Firefox Noscript), did trip it up though, and there wasn't a wait.

slightly different angle -

In the uk can you access wider selection of amazon prime video in the usa ? (i believe you could for itunes)

reason - have run out of episodes of my current favourite series and it seems to be on prime usa, AND even more suprising could get it from the microsoft store

Been doing further research on this as we are expecting our first child and need to cut back on luxuries as much as possible

Early February our sky tv contract expires and will shoot up to £46/month (currently £33 with discounts)
But I don't really want to lose sky (convenience, ease of use etc.) so as a compromise we are going to go with:
Freesat on Sky (free) with Sky+ features (£10/month)
and Netflix on the PS4 (£8/month)
= £18/month instead of £46 without discounts
Still keeping Sky Fiber and Phone

I'm bummed I will lose the 70+ Sky HD channels, free Sky F1 HD, Fox, Sky Atlantic, Discovery, History and boxsets but I think after looking at all the options and prices this seems to be the best compromise (unless I've really missed something then please let me know)

The way I look at it is if I no had sky I would most likely go out a lot more which would cost me far more then the £14 per week i pay for sky
And if I didn't go out then I would have to pay to rent or buy movies all the time if I had no sky movies ..

But then again am the kind of person that spends far to much of my time watching stuff on sky

Have you spoken to Sky about any offers for when your contract ends? Paying them £10 a month just to record programmes seems insane to me, you could easily buy a barely-used BT TV YouView box for £50 and use that for recording Freeview channels.

Freesat rather than Freeview - Yeah it's not ideal but will see how it goes. If Netflix takes over it's easy to just cancel the Sky PVR functionality

If the pixel count matters, you are going to hate All4.

Freesat doesn’t have anything to recommend it unless you can’t get Freeview or must have one of those many rubbish channels that it offers.
