Stick with Sky or Check out Alternatives?

I'm currently in the same boat. Don't watch sports, just films, normal tv and the kids enjoy their cartoons.

Monthly sky bill = £89-95

Phone and broadband = £19 line rental, £20 broadband, £2 for 1571 and £4 for some call package = £45 plus calls on top not covered by the package.
Sky TV = £44

I was looking 3 days ago at new broadband packages and they all seem to include line rental for £20 and getting the same speeds I am with Sky, 30 down and 10 up. less than 24 hours later I get an email from Sky thanking us for being a loyal customer and they've doubled the broadband speed for free to 60 down and 20 up... coincidence of fishy?

I am thinking of switching the lot. Dropping the Sky TV for free sky packages + Netflix + Amazon + Kodi. Getting a new broadband supplier up to £30 a month. I've some spare i5 PC's to convert to a media centre for my hundreds of films and tv shows/cartoons. Can also look at creating a PVR system with it.

I think it'll drop me down from £1068 a year to £575.76

Amazon Prime = £95.88
Netflix Premium = £119.88
Broadband = £360

Saving me £492.24 :o

We did the same thing last year

Went from £85 a month to £20

Now TV black friday for line rental and fibre broadband £20
Freeview (I'm looking at freesat/freeview pvr boxes but waiting till the new 2019 ones launch)

Now TV Entertainment,Movies,Kids (thanks dad)
Netflix (thanks dad)
Amazon (thanks work)

Sky Sports & BT Sports (no comment)

as I get older, I seem to be getting a lot tighter with my money

Interesting, I don't suppose any will support the Sky Q LNB (the non hybrid one)?

You know what. You may have saved me some money. We still have the skyq dish up and I was unable to get a Freesat signal. Using Freeview instead.

Do you think that's why? The dish is 18 months old.

We tend to watch series and me war documentaries, reality shows like police custody, 24 hours in a&e etc

I'd not want to pay £75 a month for that, especially if that is the discount rate! (granted that is your phone and broadband included but still)

I'd seriously consider just trialling Netflix + Freeview when your contract period/discount whatever... runs out. I've got Amazon prime + Netflix as I do a lot of shopping online anyway so Prime TV is just a free bonus.

There are a few threads in the TV sub forum with show recommendations for both Netflix and Amazon which might be worth a browse, I think there are a few reality shows available too.

If you're a fan of a show like Game of Thrones or something like that, available only on Sky then check out NowTV - you can just sign up for a short time period, plenty of offers out there for say a one month pass etc..etc..

Just an update - As I'm within the 30 days of my contract renewing I called Sky and cancelled the TV package and also got a new offer of half price broadband for 12 months

So now bill from sky = £29/month (plus any extra for calls) from £70

Will use 'Freesat from Sky' and a £8/month Netflix sub

Will keep my eye out if cancellations call me within the month for an offer on the Sky pvr functionality (extra £10/month)

Not sure if Ive misread your post but £29 pm is not half price broadband, its just broadband and not a particularly good price either if thats all thats included? Sky Fibre Max is only £27 pm on their website now.

not sure if netflix prices can be locked-in with sky but seems they may soon increase here too
Premium plan with 4K is now $16
The SD plan is increasing from $8 to $9 dollars, the HD plan from $11 to $13 dollars, and the 4K plan from $14 to $16 dollars. This is the largest increase since the streaming service launched in 2012 but Netflix’s standard plan (with HD) is still cheaper than HBO Now.
.. given netflix debts https://seekingalpha.com/article/4232398-fearful-netflix-others-greedy

I would like to watch the USA HBO streaming service .... has anyone done that on a monthly basis via a VPN. https://www.hbo.com/ways-to-get
