Strange marks on IHS of new 8600k (from Ocuk)?

Just took delivery of some gear and checked in on the CPU box to find marks i've never seen before not sure what they represent I hope it's not been used already...

That doesn't look like machining marks to me :s

Dunno about OcUK but elsewhere I've experienced it where their OEM stock blatantly has a high level of returns in it - probably due to people trying to cherry pick good clockers and returning those that don't clock well (sadly I don't have much say in where stuff is purchased from in these circumstances and in this case poor clockers don't really matter).

Probably a chip which was tested for and failed the binning process for their overclocked SKUs. I've always assumed that's what the "OEM" listings were, as inevitably there are going to be chips that don't make it, and it's not like they can reseal the box.

well funnily enough I wanted a new CPU (which I paid for) that has a chance of clocking highly as hey i'm an overclocker on an overclocking forum

Buy retail. OEM is cheaper for a reason :s

EDIT: That isn't to say you won't find good clockers in OEM or that as they leave Intel there isn't an equal chance compared to retail - but retail are boxed in packaging that can't be resealed so you know you have as good a chance as any other with OEM you take your chances.

That's not great that. Doesn't even look like there was an attempt to clean it up :(

Looks like its been given a cursory wipe down but those kind of marks tend to re-emerge unless you use something designed for cleaning stuff like that out of metal.

Someone will probably tell me it is wrong but I use Brasso as a first pass (and finish up with isopropyl).

I never realised buying an OEM CPU meant you can get a parts bin special version that's dirty as hell

How do I know if ESD measures were taken? How do I then know the life expectancy of my chip?

All the customer has to do is claim its unused to return as new and unless there are noticeable signs of usage customer services has no reason to assume otherwise - I'm betting they gave it a cursory clean and these marks have come up much more noticeably subsequently. Legally it can be put back into good stock in those circumstances.

This is why I won't buy OEM CPUs any more.

well Retail 8600k's are due 29.12.17 which I can't wait for as have parts coming this week and time off for the build.
I have been offered a return by Nathan and am thinking of going for it what would most people here do?

Hard to say. I would probably give it a go and see, stick with it, then realise that I was never happy and change it just after 30 days return period to something different. This would then end up at the bottom of a box of hardware and several years later end up on the MM at some silly knocked down price. Don't do this... Send it back.

I'd return it and go retail to ensure that it is new/sealed. It's a few quid extra for the extra several years warranty, worth it imo.

I simply would never buy OEM CPU's... this kind of thing is far too common now, many many people buy them, test them and return if not able to get the clocks they want etc. Its probably an honest mistake that its been sent out, but stick with Retail, yeah you pay more but you get the peace of mind that no one else has had a go at it first.

I don't mind the fact it's OEM in of itself and if OCUK have a look at one to check the IHS is clean that's fine with me I don't need the HSF from retail or that warm feeling of opening the box (nice as it is). I take issue that it's clearly been used and I don't believe Intel would be so cack-handed during testing that the IHS would come away looking like that.

I certainly am not waiting to the end of December!

Well i just saw this thread and made me worry as i also bought an 8600k oem and got it today (i wasnt going to be building it till next week)

And just wow not only has mine clearly also been used ! (i can not believe i am buying old/used stock as the implications are horrendous)

Mine is actually physically damaged aswell!!

Not a happy bunny like!

(cant get the last to resize properly btw soz)

I’m sending back a chip to Overclockers which I’m sure they will sell on, not because it a bad clocker but because it’s so hot at stock speed and there is a massive difference of almost 20c between the hottest and coolest core. I Have replaced it with an 8pac delidded chip because I don’t want to kill my warranty which by the way runs 2c cooler at 5ghz than the other one did at stock speeds
