Strange marks on IHS of new 8600k (from Ocuk)?

Hi I already have the pre-paid label from customer support on the phone yesterday, does that mean it must go back regardless now?

I don't mind testing it but if it were a binned lemon at overclocking i'd be gutted! At that point I wouldn't be able to return it would I?

I don't know what to think anymore hehe

It's like the CPU fairy came over night and did a clean up or change of proc!

No you dont have to return it if you have a pre paid label.

I would definitely test it and as an RMA has already been accepted you can still return it on that pre paid label given to you.

That is so strange that the marks have disapeared, never seen that before. I think you must be right the CPU fairy came and cleaned it over night. Never seen that before ever

Exposed to air (even just the difference from boxed) probably resulted in it coming out then fading - when you mix thermal pastes and/or finger prints and/or cleaning products stuff like this can happen. I've not seen it that extreme but seen stuff along these kind of lines all the time.

Great its gonna be like Christmas here the next few days with loop parts arriving then i'll have her up and running with a build log etc see what she can do

We do not bin 8600K, think that is the third time of me saying that in this thread. ;)

So no chance of a lemon, though of course it could be a lemon, it could also be a super star, silicon lottery. :)

The marks very unusual, but the first photographs you posted myself and several others were of the conclusion finger prints, which were no doubt showing due to it being cold and maybe a little condensation from the cold, now it has warmed up those marks are no longer visible.

The chain of events is:

Intel, place into trays of 21, I suspect by a robot, but spot checks could be done by humans.
Arrives at Intel hub where they might get checked over and re-packaged
Arrives at European master distribution hub, again might be check over
Arrives at OcUK or UK distribution hub, UK distributor may check over before shipping
Finally arrives at OcUK where they are removed from their cartons 420pc a go and split down of their trays of 21 into single units. At which point they are put into small white foamed boxes by OcUK warehouse booking in staff. These staff are instructed to wear gloves.

That is in essence the life of a CPU, as such they are handled by humans for checking/packaging reasons before they get to yourself. Which is why in extreme cases OEM chips can have finger prints, dirt, marks on them etc. Though if all criteria is met they should arrive with customer clean.

Also remember a finger print may not show at time of handling and the product may look clean. But under certain atmospheric conditions those finger prints will show as dirty marks, this is what I feel has happened in your situation.

Had the cpu just been delivered and been sitting in a cold van then brought into a warm house.

Edit: Forgot about reading page 2 :(

Just for those who aren't familiar with "tray" cpu's - generally look something like this:

Correct and far more expensive than a box of eggs, especially when its a carton about the size of shoe box with like 420 units of 8700K in it.

By the way, 8700K is now also in stock. :)

Follow up post!

So i received the replacement today and its spot on! (have not tested it yet but it looks perfect) no weird marks damage or anything so glad that it is sorted !

And thanks ocuk for the service and extra haribo! :D

@Gibbo @Bailey

Hi All,

So I just took DPD delivery about an hour ago of my OEM 7900x CPU from OcUK. It has a significant amount of fingerprints on the IHS and also a slight indent where the pushdown bar would potentially be after mounting. I havent tried it as im still at work, it might be fine im sure but its left me feeling disapointed given what I paid for this chip.

Gibbo - it might be worth noting, I just spoke to OcUK Alex - customer services; just now, who assured me that booking in the staff dont wear gloves as they might drop them and that it could have been tested by 8P also. After he told me this I articulated your initial post but he didnt seem phased. Conflicting messages.

Should I request RMA or at least test first?

See below images which show (not well) the bar impression and also the left IHS handle looks
rough like its been filed ever so slightly..

Dont blame OcUK, things slip through, still my favorite retailer! :)

Out of interest, mcrustk2, does the CPU still look the same as the pictures you posted earlier? I'm wondering if by immediately opening a CPU that's been brought in from the cold into a warm house has introduced any of the marks on the metal. Obviously the indent won't be affected by heat. :p

This is why when you get your goodies from the courier, you should really let them sit at room temperature for about an hour - ideally with the boxes open to maximise exposure and to allow the moisture to evaporate. Of course it's all too tempting to use them straight away and I am almost always guilty of this. :o
