Strange problem

Hi guys, I have encountered a strange problem within the last few days and at a loss to what is causing it, so any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

To start my system is 2500k at 4.6ghz, 980ti, SSD's, runs everything max at 60fps no bother.

Recently some titles have experienced random frame rate drops, but only when moving the mouse. For example, when playing Homeworld remastered, after approx 15 mins this problem starts. It requires a restart of the game to clear it and play for another 15-20 mins. If I do not move the mouse, the FPS goes back to 60, but as soon as I move the mouse, FPS drops to next to nothing. This has happened in LOTR SOM also, both running through Steam.

I have the Steam overlay disabled. tried changing the GPU to max power management, but no difference. Task manager and Afterburner show nothing strange maxing the CPU or GPU.

Any ideas??? Thanks

have you checked the temps of your GPU and CPU?

something maybe overheating and being throttled back

what GPU are you using?

can use afterburner to monitor cpu and gpu temps while in game

Temps are fine. Gpu is a msi 980ti.

Very strange as the fps only plummet when i move the cursor. And the problem may only happen after 20mins.

No, I have not touched my overclock in 3 years. Thus problem just staarted in the last week or so. I played the entire LOTR SOM campaign without this issue so it cannot be the overclock. I am thinking it is something to do with steam?

Have you tinkered with the mouse software (if you are using any)? Altered the polling rate?

Tried setting the game(s) to run as admin?

No mouse software.

I have just had another occurrence. This time 20 mins into a session of Homeworld. I had the Task Manager open at the same time and after a short time of stuttering I tabbed out to see that the CPU usage appears to have dropped from a consistent 50% during game play, to about 10% when whatever happened, happened.

Tried everything I can think of.

Re tested overclock. Added more Vcore to be sure.
Updated all drivers with Snappy Drivers
Verified all game files with Steam
Checked all power management settings

This is the strangest issue I have had in a long time.
Again this morning, playing happily for 20 mins then boom, fps drop. If I do not touch the mouse the FPS jump back to max and the game runs smooth, but as soon as I touch the mouse, FPS plummet. Looking at the CPU utilization it drops from 50 to nothing at this point. Exit and restart the game to be fine for another 20 mins. So frustrating.

Odd suggestion but do you have another mouse to try?

Even a crappy old USB one?

also try this:

lower the mouse's "report rate". In the software menu for my Logitech mouse the report rate is set to 1000 as default. try dropping it to 125 and test.

It might be an Nvidia driver issue - a couple of people reported similar problems in the Graphics Cards section of the forum.

Try a different Nvidia driver (clean install) just to be sure.

Rolled back to 358.50 with a clean install. Still happens.

Seriously at a loss to what is doing this. I do not have the time to fiddle with this and actually willing to pay someone to sort this. I do not know if that breaks forum rules so tell me if it does. I know next to nothing about event logs and system monitoring so do not know how to figure out what is happening around 20 mins into game play to make my games stutter with mouse movement.
