Strange problem

Could be a dodgy mouse, USB port or motherboard issue.

Try a different mouse.
Reinstall motherboard USB drivers.
Try your current mouse on a different PC/laptop if you can.
If you have another monitor, set up twin monitors and have task manager performance open on the second screen. Watch for CPU spikes or other strange happenings when moving mouse.
EDIT ^^ Seen you already done this. ;)

You say 20min in, is that from PC start-up or PC was running for over 20min when you started the game?

If its a time issue then It could be the CPU, clock it down and see if it still happens.
Also cannot rule out a memory issue.

Remove sticks of ram and check.

Thanks for the ideas.

It is approx 20 mins into a game. The FPS drop. If I do not touch the mouse, the FPS quickly recover to 60 (vsync). I quit the game an immediately restart, then I have about another 20 mins before rinse repeat.

I think I shall try another mouse as you suggest.

If its not the mouse then I would do a mem check on your memory.

I am no expert, but sometimes bad ram can cause really strange things to happen. :(

Memtest completed this morning. Scaled my overclock right the way back. No luck.

Installed legacy driver for my razer mouse. No change.

Going to source another mouse later and try that out.

OK tried the new mouse, no luck.

Also reinstalled Steam, tried 4 sets of old Nvidia drivers, nothing.

Compared the processes running before and after the FPS, no change.

Using the arrow keys on the keyboard also drops the FPS. So both mouse and keyboard. Something to do with the USB ports?

I really want this sorted so whoever can provide a solution I shall give a £10 so they can have a few beers! Its that annoying!

I am certain its a software issue - but guessing you are reluctant to clean install.

Driver programs are naff so avoid them for keeping your drivers up to date and just do it manually.

A clean install, all latest drivers i am sure will fix the issue.

This is also kind of needed so we can rule out software completely before looking at a hardware cause.

when did the issue start? did you do any hardware changes or anything before the issue started?

if you don't want to do a clean install maybe a system restore back to before the issue started if possible?

what OS are you using?

Arrrggghh. Yeah this is what I am not looking forward too.

I just updated from 7 to 10 a few months ago after not doing a clean format for years. So cannot be bothered with it again, but if it is the only thing to rid this issue.

On Windows 10. Only changes would have been the Windows updates and new Video drivers

if your running W10 cant you just do the OS reset rather than clean install?

resets the OS to default but leaves everything else in tact

But if it leaves everything intact doest it leave the problem intact?? I am not sure? Anyone else think that is the way to go?

I think it is a Steam issue as it has happened with 3 of the games I have played over the last few days. However I was playing Witcher 3 through GOG for hrs earlier in the week with no bother.

if its a OS issue it should fix it, I've never tried the reset OS before so not too sure if it keeps drivers etc.

edit..........think its called refresh not reset that keeps all your files and just resets W10 to factory settings

A list of removed apps will be saved on your desktop to a Removed Apps.html file when the refresh has finished. I am not 100% sure about drivers.

When Windows 10 is refreshed, it will place a Windows.old folder in the root directory of the Windows drive that contains a copy of the previous Windows 10 installation as a backup.

I would be keen to do a clean install anyway as you have not done one in a while - and its good to do now and then.

Tried the system restore. Keyboard and mouse completely unresponsive now. Doing a fresh install.

OK keep us posted on how it goes! Clean install is the way to go!

Chipset drivers first
Then the others dont really matter what order! Just make sure you get all the latest from the manufacturers websites!

Hate to ask now as you're already doing a clean install.

But did you attempt at clean driver installs? I imagine something, such as a USB host driver was auto updated by Win 10.

Did you try new BIOS firmware? New Chipset drivers? Sounds like it's mobo more than anything.

^ this, it sounds just like outdated drivers mainly USB. Even though it's worked fine for x amount of time it may be that something else has updated and doesn't play nice with it

OSD overlays can also cause this problem. Along with raptr

Also what is this snappy drivers you speak of? Do them yourself!!!

Also check if the is a Bios update for your motherboard for windows 10.

Check firmware for your mouse is also up to date.

Morning guys.

Ok fresh install going well, just getting everything back to where it was.

I have not had a opportunity to run a game test and might not today (busy with the kids)

Snappy Drivers was a program that supposedly updates all your drivers. When I installed it, it flagged up about 40 different drivers out of date, most of which I did not know what they were, chipset and the controllers etc. Looks like that might have caused the issue. Just going to download the two chipset drivers from my motherboard website.

Will keep you posted.
