Street Fighter (SFIV, SSFIV, HDR)

To become very good, most people have a main character that they know inside out. Setups, combos, punishes etc. Then maybe a secondary is a matchup is hard. (this was emphasised a lot in SF4 where some matchups were literally 8-2)
But they have tried to avoid this in 5.

V Trigger. (activated by pressing HP+HK when the bar is full) Its a new mechanic in 5.

The meter builds by taking damage or using your skill (MP+MK)
Each characters is different.

Thanks again, I just saw a video of the V Trigger, they siad it adds extra attacks to the basic attacks but maybe thats just on the character I was watching.

Lots to learn!

What's the verdict on this? My fingers are so battered from gaming recently that I'm not sure if I can actually play this as it's lots and lots of presses on the joy stick -.- Gah I need my fix!

I want to main Ken but people on the net are saying he's terrible! I'll stick with him for a bit anyway.

Winning about 50% of my games in the noob ranked league at the moment.

How does the ranking system work, assume it's based on the win/loss but I notice characters have levels is that linked to the rank ?

I was wanting to pick this up as its been a long ass time since I played.
Normally I'd go through story mode with all the characters first then into the multiplayer.

But no storymode til june? :/

There is a small story mode but it's a token gesture I think as you'd complete it with all characters in less than an hour, actually probably a lot less than an hour.

From what I can tell, you get points for each win (you even get points for losing but I imagine when you get to higher levels this will stop, I'm guessing you will lose exp). After a certain amount of points you level up. In Ranked you're matched with people roughly around your level.

I may be wrong but this is my observation.

In casual it seems you're matched randomly. I'm level 3 and I played a level 16 player.

2 different ranking systems:
Player Rank (PP in SF4) - Based on your overall win/loss
Character Rank (BP in SF4) - Based on a specific character win/loss

How the match up algorithm shorts you out is anyones guess. But as everyone is at a low rank at the moment, you will most likely run into lots of ranges of abilities. Give it a few weeks and it will level out.

I used to be unbeatable on street fighter 2 at the arcades in my youth and was reasonably good on the snes with a pad too.

I bought street fighter 4 though and couldn't get to grips with using the pad at all.

I've always been pretty good at fighters on the arcade and put this down to the arcade controls. I used to love doing the ultra combo's on people on killer instinct.

Now, my question is, which is the best bang for buck arcade fighting stick and would it make the difference and feel like I was using a real arcade stick so I can get to grips with SF5.

Another thing is, which are the best guides to look at/best moves to learn first?

The game is far simpler than IV, you can learn all the moves and combos yourself and the tutorial covers the systems.

Note that everyone was "good" offline, and often get upset at getting spanked online when they realise they're not anywhere near as good as they thought they were.

This happened to me with Halo, and so many people on here thought they were good at Mario Kart but they didn't even know what snaking was!

Then Nintendo removed it :(

Most arcade sticks will work on PC. ebay will most likely have a tone of Madcatz TEs (and TE Round 2) you could buy. They are out and out my favourite stick.
PS4 - The Venom is the best value atm. Although I would change the stick itself.

Prima has an official guide ($10). But if you give it a week then Youtube will be filled with tips, combos and training ideas. Or you could sit in training mode and come up with some stuff yourself :p
