hey all (especially helmutcheese becuase i know hes overclocked a striker)

ive tried overclocking my striker extreme but everytime i do it just sits their beeping and not booting. even if i do it just a small amount it still beeps. the LCD poster tells me somehting about the DRAM but in the list of error codes inthe manual its not telling me anything useful for that error code. I KNOW i can get this puppy well above 3ghz but somethings stopping it! ive tried doing it manually with the BIOS and with things like Ntune and AI booster. all have the same result - beeping and a black screen!

heres my spec:

Mobo: Asus Striker Extreme 680i (1305 Bios)
Processor: QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700, 2666 MHz (10 x 267 = stock values)
Ram: 8GB of Corsair XMS2 CM2X2048-6400C5 (4x2GB sticks)
Memory Speed: DDR2-800mhz in Dual Channel mode
Mem Timings: 5-5-5-18 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 22-42-3-6-3-3 (RC-RFC-RRD-WR-WTR-RTP)



Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX 768mb

Display: DELL E248WFP 24" Widescreen LCD with a native res of 1920 x 1200

Thats your problem. You are putting LOADS of pressure on your memory controller (NB) running 8GB of ram. First try removing all but one stick then if it clocks ok you may need to slacken off timings, increase your Vdimm, increase you NB voltages and PLL/references voltages if you have them.
 
ok so ill left all but one RAM stick in and i overclocked it the smallest amount using AI overclock int he bios adn it clocked up to 2.79 - but neither xp or vista would boot all the way to the desktop. they both looked up just before the login screen.

I guess the ram i have isnt very tolerent!

Anyone know how i can get this to atleast 3ghz with 8gb of ram installed?
 
You can try 4gb (2x2) place the first module in the nearest dimm slot to the CPU boot up enter bios and enter memory timings under advanced settings. Enter memory voltage as recommended by the memory manufacture. Exit and save. Shut down and place the next module in the corresponding coloured dimm slot (slot 2) and boot the machine.

Ensure you unlink the ram in the FSB memory config menu in the Bios

EDIT: ill have to fit the floopy drive i ordered to do this, windows flash util wont let you downgrade, only upgrade.

ok so ive flashed the bios to the one that plays nice. Im still getting the same results though - i can overclock by 5% and it will post and boot but lock whilst loading windows.

specifically, what memory timings should i be using? Ive now set the memory to 2.1 volts as recommended by corsair.

its a quad boot running xp 64bit, ubuntu 64bit, vista extreme 64bit and MacOsx Tiger. the timings - i know the defualt times, but i thought i need to adjust these during overclocking. also cosair reckon the voltage should be 2.1 - should i set to 1.9?

im a bit of a noob overclocking this new stuff. the last thing i overclocked was a 3ghz Pentium 4 HT and manage to squeeze 3.6 out of it. im a bit out of the loop with all this quadcore and new ram stuff.

and yes the link u gave is my ram.

No problem m8.

If corsair recommend 2.1v then set at 2.1v including the memory timings in the Bios. You wont need to adjust the timings as of yet. The aim is to over clock the CPU only hence unlinking the ram in the Bios

Out of interest which OS will you be over clocking on

heres the thing. im a 3d artist so i need it to be a stable overclock running windows xp 64bit since this is were i work in 3dstudio max and Silo, and after effects. the extra juice all helps with render times.

i have vista ultimate on here for games and media center (Crysis is just awesome it already plays it at 1920 x 1200 with everything turned up! - but i like more power) so if this is also stable that would be cool.

mac os was an experiment (which worked!) and ubuntu is useful but not terribly neccisary although i do use it for blender occasionaly and some other stuff.

However, if its a stable overclock shouldnt any os run with it? fortunatly the bios allows the saving of profiles so if xp is stable and vista isnt then atleast i can switch profiles easily without having to set it all up each time.

i really appreciate your help CyZMyAssBaby with a bit of luck, between u and me it will work faster!! :)

Yip if it is stable as you rightly say any OS will run with it.

Have you set the ram timings and memory voltages in the Bios and set the memory to "unlinked" Are you ready to OC;)

Use the XP OS as you say you can save the profile, and switch easily

As above do not use 1305 its a POS, 1303 is best, some claim 1301 for Quads.

There is lots of FSB holes, you need run bellow or above it, I think someone said other day on 1301 or 1303 that 1450FSB works, I aint sure as not got a Quad and all work for me then a brick wall for FSB or RAM at 1900mhz.

My only real input is this Mobo is a POS and more so for Quads, EVGA had to revise some SMD's on the PCB for more volts to let Quads run better.

There is a Mod for the Asus but it means removing a SMD and replacing it with another.

I agree, you are running too much RAM (and probably too many OS's)

Golden rule is keep it simple to start with.:)

Post what timings, voltages and settings you are using so far and ditch the 1305 BIOS for the 1303 version.

If you want to additionally use core temp with vista. To get Coretemp 0.95.4 working in Vista X64 without having to disable the driver signing requirement.

Just make sure before you start the actuall "CoreTemp.exe", you run "coretemp-startup.bat" first

Yep - im going to test it primarily with XP64. Im going to spend the afternoon tinkering today.

ive been reading about and it seems this chip will quite happily go all the to 3.4ghz. i did read somewhere that simply changing the cpu multiplier from the defualt 10 to 11 will boost it up to about 2.99ghz but when i change it save and reboot it drops itself back down. im guessing becuase a lot of the other settings are set to auto its setting itself back to 10 on a reboot.

ive got cpu-z, everest and sisoft sandra, and i will run prime on it for aslong as possible. whats the minimum you would run it for? is see a lot of people leaving it going for 12+ hours. would 4 or 5 do it? ill also bee running it through SPECviewperf

ive been reading this also which is giving me confidence to push this thing. anyone care to explain how to go about the stuff on this page? (hmm it wont let me say h exus)

also, any recommends on better cooling? ive got an Akasa mirage 62 case which has the hood that sits over the cpu and sucks the air off it straight out the back, but its the stock heatsink and fan. could do with something more capable really.

So getting this thing to 3.0 - 3.2 ghz with 8gb RAM is a tall order?? as a 3d artist, ram is slightly more important than clock speed. RAM is used when your working but when it comes to rendering 3d its mostly all done by the cpu (unless ure using Nvidia's Gelato) and is less dependent on system ram. 2-4gb is fine for this.

Prime tests depend really, I normally have a overclocking speed in mind.. so first step is to get the system up and running @ that speed, then I run 20/30 min Prime95's if its stable then drop the vcore if not raise them up.. Do a bit of trial and error till I think I have a "stable" setup and then I would run Prime over a longer period normally around 8 hours..
 
Lostbear your Bios setting should be set to these settings before your start to O/C

increase the FSB slowly. A steady approach is better (increase incrementally by 5Mhz)
