Struggling to keep interest

I find as I've got older, I very rarely like too much of a challenge anymore. I like a game to be difficult enough where it'll keep me focussed, but I find now if its too hard and things take multiple attempts I'm just too impatient and stressy to enjoy the challenge.

Finding the time to game is also difficult, with annoying adult commitments getting in the way, I'm also tired a lot which means I don't want to game.

With that all said though, I still keenly follow the gaming world and love to see new games etc.

I think I've found my game :). It's weird. All these years, I've loved playing games like Disordered, Batman, Bioshock and many more like them. I started to play more RTS games as I got older and built up a nice collection of games that I enjoy. These still don't always hold my interest for very long.

Recently I've started playing Civ V. I love the turn based gameplay and everything just feels right. It's relaxing, you don't have to make quick thinking decisions and it's really enjoyable. I bought this game when this was first released. At the time I tried the game for a few minutes and decided it was boring / couldn't get into it. Now this game is the most fun I've been having in a while.

You should give Stellaris a spin. I started with CiV V last year and now it has opened open a whole new genre (i.e. 4X and grand strategy) for me with lots to choose from.

I've tried this already. I'm a big fan of the space settings in these type of games. The learning curve I haven't managed to get to grips with just yet. I think I need to watch more tutorials (any recommendation?). The time I did try this game, I gave up. I didn't have time to really do anything before I was attacked.

I love the soundtrack though!

Did you play the game with the tutorial settings on? That's pretty much how I learned the game. When I watched Youtube vids I realized there wasn't really a need for me to watch them since I learned enough from the built-in tutorial. The learning curve wasn't as bad as I originally imagined considering I've never played a Paradox game before.

For more details on Diplomacy and Ship Building I refer to reddit. The most knowledgeable ones are there constantly posting very very thorough tips.

Yeah I'm finding that a lot.

I think a younger me would have absolutely loved Dirt Rally, but the 36 year old me just doesn't have the patience to sink hours and hours of practice into it.

Certainly can't sit playing games like I used to. Then again I never used to have to work so much, have an AMG to play with and a fiancée etc etc. I guess life changes.

A few games can hook me now and again still though, but nothing like they once did.

Well if I had an AMG and a missus then the PC probably would have been sold long ago !

I really struggle to get into games lately. I've got so much backlog now that it's all a bit overpowering as well.

There are times that I would like to really get into a game but there are none that take my fancy these days.

There are many factors that play into it. Being older, challenges are less appealing (as you're mostly past the time where you have to prove something); you also lose that "first time magic impression" which you can (obviously) have only once. And I think not having enough time to sink and immerse yourself in them also plays a part. Ultimately, just sell the PC and forget about it. Half-arsing it is just a way to waste your life.

It's all about moderation. If you sit in a dark room for hours on end then ultimately you will get bored at some point. I tend to play every other day in the evenings and during the day I work or at the weekend I will spend time outside with the kids. Before I had kids then I would spend most evenings gaming but very rarely during the day.

I admit that gaming had come to a bit of a dead end with regards to innovation with not a lot of new ideas with mainly prequels, sequels or remasters. I would say indie games would be the only way to get anything different.

:cool:I'm 45 and have been gaming all my life and don't think I will ever stop.

Surely it can't be that hard to find a few hours here and there to do something you enjoy? Playing computer games are a good way to relax and unwind and as valid a form of entertainment as anything else. Lots of people sit on the couch for hours after work watching soaps and reality tv, they could be using that time to fit in a few hours gaming instead once or twice a week.

Nicely put in to perspective there Mark.

Used to be like that, but not any more. I have the time, but I do not have the mood to play anything.

Maybe is the 4 hours commuting every day on the dreadful M62, especially the exhausting 2 hours on the way back, after 7 1/2 hours in an office draining my brain to write code and think (literally) of everything.
(130 miles round trip of which 80 are motorway, however the avg trip speed is 38mph!!!!! explains a lot)

Not a single game entertains me today. I cannot play offline games, because I feel "cut off" from all my friends who play WoT, or from the "online world".
(which WoT I played since 2011 but I find now very frustrating to say the least).

Hell, last night removed anything I do not want to play, and the only game left on my PC is Xcom 2. WoT, AW, TESO, SWTOR, Stellaris, the last 3 TW games, and much more got deleted. Looking at more than 350 games Steam list, and nothing interests me. Nor any new games are there to interest me.

And I haven't watched TV since 2009.
