Students = Cheap windows 7

No, you misunderstand me. I would just like some definitive evidence that when you purchase Windows 7 Home Premium Student offer, you can install it no bother to a brand new Harddrive/running Windows 7 RC.

Not opinions.

First if, "Windows 7 Home Premium Student offer" = Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade edition, the student offer isn't any different to the full price upgrade copies.

Secondly, Microsoft have already stated, in order to upgrade from XP, you must do a clean install.

From the Windows Blog:

"Upgrade" versions of Windows 7 require Windows XP or Windows Vista to be installed on your computer. The Windows 7 setup process will look for a previous version of Windows on the computer during installation and if a previous version is not found, activation will not complete successfully using the Product Key for the upgrade license.

If for some reason you need to reinstall Windows 7 and have the upgrade version you will be required to install a previous version of Windows before installing Windows 7.

Upgrade versions require Windows XP or Windows Vista to be running on your computer before installing Windows 7. Full versions of Windows 7 don't require a previous version of Windows to be running on your computer. Both upgrade and full versions contain the same features. If you want to format your hard drive when installing Windows 7, you will need the full version. In general, choose the full version of Windows 7 if you don't have a previous version of Windows on your PC. Choose the upgrade version if you have Windows XP or Windows Vista on your PC.

YOU CAN ALSO PERFORM A CUSTOM INSTALLATION IF YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT HAVE AN OPERATING SYSTEM, OR IF YOU WANT TO SET UP A MULTIBOOT SYSTEM ON YOUR COMPUTER

Don't think I make it any more clearer for any of you

But I don't understand how you upgrade from XP then as it also says it requires a clean install, how can it do a clean install while also requiring another version of Windows on the hard drive  Does it format the hard drive as part of the installation process or something?

And the ones on student offer are upgrade editions. But the guy above says that if you don't have an OS installed you will have the option to perform a clean install even with the upgrade version of Windows 7 Proffesional.

Conflicting information. Yay.

Ok, I have just installed my windows vista upgrade disc onto my laptop. As stated above it can be installed onto a clean system with no previous operating system installed, you just bypass the serial entry and select which operating system version you have purchased. But there is a problem the cd key that comes with the disc will not work once you have done this as the key determines wether you have an upgrade or full version. So when i now go to activate windows vista with my upgrade key after a clean install from my upgrade disc it states that my key is not vaild and i need to run setup from my previous operating system. So you cant use your upgrade key without having a previous version of windows installed. I,m presuming that the windows 7 upgrade will be the same...

It means that the Win7 installer first confirms that there is an activated copy of XP installed on the drive and then it performs a clean install which seemingly means it deletes the XP partition or possibly even the whole drive.

How many GB is the download?

And if you have no OS installed? Then what, do you need to put an XP disk in or something for it to know you have an older OS? I only have an XP Upgrade Edition cd.

What you have to do now, is run the disc from within windows, the upgrade button now will be unlocked.

So upgrade and then use the serial key.

edit:

download link is now live

7 Pro x64 is 3006.46MB and is an executable.

Not really as if you have a FULL RETAIL version you can also choose to do a custom installation without needing a previous version on your drive; I believe that’s what it’s referring to.

Link in my email did not work for me. I clicked it about 4 times, then it said that I have downloaded it too many times and need to contact customer services. Brilliant.
