hmmm this has gone from a heated debate (which is fine) and is now verging on the edge of personal attacks I feel.
James J, I never said you had to use a background by the way, just that saying they aren't needed isn't true. I've taken product shots using 1 sheet of glass and used the wall behind.
James, I really think you should request this be closed. Then start another thread about lighting challenges. Post a photo of a product and then one of the setup and ask others how they would light it, with examplesI think you'll get much more feedback and interest from that thread

Thats fair enough mate and yeah I'm just using a wall which is about 2 metres away from the back of my shots as the light falls off dramatically behind my shots anyway, giving me the black background I seek with some nice soft lighting also.
I already have requested it to be closed after I initially requested it to be cleaned. I won't be posting another thread though on this subject as it'll just get trashed again so its pointless. No point running an argument over into a fresh thread, especially when trying to introduce more people into this kind of area which is a pure minefield in terms of research, equipment and setups.

Set out clear rules that while discuss of setups is fine, you don't want heated debates on certain topics (strobes vs studio etc).
That way, it'll be easier to get a mod to remove them
And you're right, the amount of info is mind boggling. The number of stobist videos and studio videos i've watched must be coming up to 50 hours now, and that's without the websites and books

i'll have a watch of that Garry is always a good watch, plus I missed the event this year. Perhaps we should have an OCUK trip to the next one

It's always interesting to see just how 'work' images compare to those from a photographer's 'everyday' shots, which I assume are the ones on your flickr and 500px links?
Does that mean that these were shot with this new lighting set-up of yours?
Nope, those are from just a reflector as I didn't have a suitable base or location for my setup then.
Still awaiting a black glossy panel to be delivered, then I'll be taking some shots. The ones I've taken at the moment are only basic stock test shots, which aren't creative in the slightest and don't show the full potential of the setup.
I'll have something to show most likely next weekend but I doubt this thread will still be going at that point anyway.

So what is it that you actually do? And what are you taking photos of that makes money? I've read and re-read this thread a fair few times and I can't quite make head nor tail of it - I think I might have a rough idea, but I can't be sure I've got my facts straight.

I'm not sharing my photos that regularly make money as that would be just stupid as people could copy the ideas and just sell them as their own. I said I'd get round to it "tomorrow" but I haven't as I'm still awaiting some glass, coloured acrylic and wood bases to arrive before I can go forward with a few ideas I have. I won't be posting my images at all though now due to how this thread has turned out.

I think he just wants to see some before and after shots to see how it compares.
And, I wouldn't be afraid of someone stealing your ideas, you've only got to open any magazine to see lots of high quality adverts. Plus, it doesn't exactly show your set up
Did you find anywhere decent to get the acrylics from? I've been using some old glass from cabinet doors and will be looking at some acrylic and vinyl bases/backgrounds as well as some coloured gels

Ordered some acrylics from ebay so I'll let you know what they are like when they turn up. I've got prompts in a few wickes stores for black gloss kitchen door returns as I know the regional manager so I might get lucky there. They are thicker than acrylic, about the same price (lol) and far more rigid so probably ideal for photography bases.
I think that's a probably a slight overreaction, given the circumstances.
Still, if you're not willing to show the images, you could at the very least talk about them. Explain what they are, why you do it, how the inspiration first came about, why you've reached the limits of your previous equipment, etc.
Surely that's not off-limits?
Given your fear of having your work copied and your source of revenue stopped, would you have shown them anyway?
Or were you planning to show off work that was completely unrelated to these profitable images?
Well, pardon me for making a gentle enquiry into the nature of your work.
I was planning on doing some creative shots that aren't stock to show some work. I still might, yet I haven't received the other items needed to make it work just yet
I won't talk about what my stock photos are as they aren't anyones business but my own. A wedding photographer rarely shares secrets to their most profitable work for example.
Its not an over-reaction at all, I'm just protecting profitable work which i can't link to anyway as it would be self promotion, which is against forum rules.
Be patient and you'll see something soon!
