Stuttering 6XX and in what games?

Guys I was gonna be buying a gtx 670 windforce today but this is a bit off putting , is it just a matter of drivers or would I be better off waiting or going with something else ???

It seems to be game dependant and being honest there will be a fix. It would worry me more if nvidia had not acknowledged the error.

If you play FIFA 12 or Batman AC, you could run into stuttering until the fix but if I was buying a 670, I would shelve those 2 titles until it is sorted and carry on getting the WF regardless. That is me though.

Fifa 12 is the worst for stuttering for me (middle of the pitch when the ball is lobbed), but I think that is more down to the game as I had a similar issue on my CF6870s.

Hope Fifa 13 gets more love on the PC...

Deus Ex HR never seems smooth to me with my 680.

BF3 seems fine to me.

HL2 (Cinematic Mod) seems fine.

The stutter you had with cf6870's would have been crossfire related, had the same with cf6950's, disable one card and its fine. Stutter in same places on a 670, heavy action in the middle of the park. The game has never had decent PC supper though to be fair.

I wouldn't actively discourage anyone from buying a 670, still a fantastic card. Any other games anyone want tested before I pack up my 670 tonight?

You all know the stuttering issue that Nvidia is trying to fix only occurs when Vsync is on or Adaptive sync is on. .

There seems to be two causes for stuttering from my amateurish view

Cause 1, Adaptive V-Sync or some form of V-Sync issue

Cause 2, Dynamic clock changing, changing clock speeds during a game when all V-sync settings are off. You can log your GPU freq on GPU-Z and the changes coincide with the stuttering you get.

Even with V-Sync on I could run around a room all day in a game and have no problems, I don't think I experienced any issue with that. However the dynamic clock thing, if I was running around that room and an explosion went off, suddenly the card would change its frequency and the game would stutter the explosion would be like a slide show momentarily and then once it finished the card would drop its clock setting. An example would be Tribes Ascend I could practically cause my card to stutter this way on queue when I used the juggernaut and its fusion mortar at close range.

Whilst I can see Nvidia solving the adaptive v-sync one very quickly if what I have read is true and the whole 3d clock is down to a hardware level I don't know what they can do to change that. Not everyone was suffering it but I did and even on an occasional my card clocked itself down to 300Mhz and stayed there... even if I turned Furmark on, there is definitely something fishy.

Out of interest have any of you tried forcing the card to the Maximum Performance power profile in any games in which you are suffering from stuttering?

It's in the Nvidia control panel and it is set to Adaptive by default. If I recall correctly it ensures the card stays clocked at 1006Mhz at all times, only ever going higher for the boost.

Could be worth a go.

Thanks for suggesting it! I must admit I'd forgotten it was set to adaptive.

I've just played a quick game of FIFA with adaptive v-sync enabled and the card stays at 980Mhz (which means no boosting is taking place on my card). Whilst I can't say that it has completely stopped the micro-pauses I think it may have reduced their frequency a bit.

Disabling v-sync in FIFA results in a bit of minor tearing in the EA logo when replays pop up but other than that it seems to run perfectly. For some reason the clock speed now includes boost as Precision X shows it running @ 1063MHz.

I decided to re-run Batman on the same power settings with both the frame rate limiter and v-sync disabled, but it was as bad as ever. Oddly despite using the same settings as when I re-ran FIFA the clock speed was back down @ 980MHz.

Still 1 out of 2 ain't bad so thanks again for suggesting it :)

Does anyone know if the fifa 12 demo has this stutter issue?

Because I would like to see if it happens on my rig.

It might, depends what if any updates have been applied to the game and if those have been updated in the demo too, worth a try.

I only get stutter in Diablo 3, but that's a Blizzard problem! and thankfully doesn't last long :)

From the list of stutter reported games in OP... I have played the following stutter-free:

Batman AC
Skyrim
Hard Reset

Also have no stutter in:
Anno 2070
COD MW3
Company of Heroes
Frozen Synapse
Payday: The Heist
Portal 2
R.U.S.E
Sup Com 2
Total War: Shogun
Warhammer 40k DOW2
BF3
ME3
Metro 2033
SC Conviction
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Crysis 2
Serious Sam 3
Sniper Elite V2
King Arthur II
Kingdoms of Amalur
Red Faction Armageddon
Saints Row The Third
Singularity
Sins of a Solar Empire Trinity
Witcher 2
AC Revelations
Darkness II
Fallout New Vegas
Fear 3

... I jump back and forth between different games frequently... these are all the ones I've been playing since the 690 arrived

I've also been using the EVGA precision x frame rate limiter (both on and off) and adaptive vsync (both on and off)

Running standard vsyn within the control panel and the games that stutter for me are as follows:

Dirt 3
F1 2011
Skyrim
Deus X
BF3 (although this has always ran badly for me for some reason)

Games that dont so far:

None

I dont know if anyone else can confirm, but for me, I will have the FPS locked at 60 as you would expect and then every so often a small drop is experienced to about 56-57 then back up but this produces a noticeable stutter in game.

Is this what others are seeing?

I'm not sure that's this stuttering issue. Does it stutter all the time?

It will do this quite frequently whilst playing (random times but generally within every 30 seconds or so), its distracting and very noticeable.

With my old 470 in, I dont have this issue at the same settings with the same games. I also notice that in Precision X I am getting drops in the core frequency not sure if this coincides.

Does it occur when vsync off? I haven't read enough about the issue (as I don't have it) to fully understand it.

Exactly what I was seeing, small frame drops that shouldn't make any difference result in something resembling a slide show lasting a few seconds.

Doesnt look like it although its hard to tell with all the tearing etc.

I tried the Frame Limeter which seemed to be ok, but still had lots of tearing which I cant be doin with.

What have you done pgi? Did you send yours back or you waiting for a driver update?
